Yeah as much as I’m into weather…I wouldn’t pick a location just based on climo. Commute…proximity to cool places to go and things to do is a much bigger realistic factor. I really do love north end one of the best places to live in the Puget sound area which is already one of the best places to live in this country.

Climate and economic opportunity are all I look at, really. Could never live somewhere like SoCal or Phoenix.

Like 2004-05 which was record setting wet in SoCal and very dry in western WA?

I don't think it really matters... anything can happen.    Including a winter like 2004-05.    Or a very wet winter in the PNW.

My original plan was to enjoy a lovely day at the lake for my day off…That changed when I decided to put the Starlink up, took way longer than I had anticipated but still snuck over to the lake around 4pm for a few hours. Was lovely! Oh and I moved from 1997 internet to 2022 internet! Wow it’s fast!!

Yeah you're right, I'll call European Center first thing tomorrow and tell them to shut it all down. Can you handle calling NOAA?

In fact I think a 130 is flying through Ian right now, time to bring it home guys cause Tim said science is cancelled!!

Sure would be nice to get just a run-of-the-mill rain event to tamp down that annoying smoldering Bolt Creek fire.

Things are pretty similar to 1975 if we're looking at muIti year Niña. With that said, I think too much stock is put into "multi" year anything ENSO. This fall is behaving very similarly to 1988, 2000, 2017, etc

I'm really frustrated right now.  It has always bugged the hell out of me when things don't get going by late September at the latest.  In spite of that I think the winter has a real shot to be something great.  Just have to get through this period of doldrums without going nuts.

I think this winter has a great chance for some real Arctic air for the region. Just might have to wait until Jan or Feb which is going to drive many people crazy!

I would throw out 2000.  Very cool summers with that Nina.  That obviously doesn't fit.  1988 and 2017 are on the analog list.  We're about to break away from 1975 big time, because that one turned very wet in October.  I just don't think what we are seeing is typical after 100 days with less than a half inch of rain, which in itself is extremely rare.

Yeah...I did a study the other day on winters that worked out after having an extremely dry late summer / early autumn and of those most delivered in Jan.

Phil does have a point about a weak jet potentially being great for us in the winter...at least for cold.  The ridge / trough placement should eventually fall into Nina climo.  A slow jet could mean big amplification.

Yes, in the winter.

Falls that are more or less completely devoid of any jet stream activity tend to offset that in DJF.

Even favorable, thoroughly blocky winters like 2013-14 and 1978-79 both had very wet Septembers in the region with strong early fall jet activity. Nothing remotely similar this year.

Well a strong jet would flood western Canada with mild air so I’m not sure that’d bode well either.

We'll just have to wait and see.  We have years like 1929-30, 1936-37, and 1942-43 that worked out really nicely in January.  1942 was a Nina and it didn't get active until the very end of October.

I am getting antsy though.
