We are finally seeing this bad thing break down.  The eye is starting to collapse, but winds are still in rotation.  Overaland is should break down more as time goes by.  But there is still super strong gusts and winds with very heavy rain.  Coastal locations will see sporadic surges of water.

What stinks is how slow the hurricane is moving, just making things worse for everyone.  I am confident in the State Emergency Services/Government and people coming together to pull through, but this is going to be a really messy one unfortunately.

Those first responders are incredible!  I'm glad it looks like they took it out? :) What a scary scene though.  I mean, you'd feel so hopeless seeing the fire. What could you even do?

After experiencing Noru and Florida simultaneously getting hit by Ian…. I have to say that we are extremely fortunate and lucky to have storm coverages we have in the States. Coverages here are scarce and limited  at best prior to and during the storm. most residents rely on PA regarding the storm and for some unknown reasons, most refuse to evacuate. State media does storm coverage but only warned residents of the tracking and timing.

Images and videos of are also very limited and the only real news to be heard of is a government release airports shutdown for the storm.

we’re fortunate to have guys like Jim Cantore still going out there in the middle of the storm doing coverages for us.

I place the Wooly Worms reliability a bit above my arthritic left knee but below the Old Farmers Almanac.  I was going to post the link for a good article on the subject but I can't figure out how to make the link active.  If you google (Wooly Worms the original winter weather outlooks) it will get you right to it.  The folklore basically says the thicker the brownish red band is on the caterpillar, the warmer the winter.  The one I posted is the blackest Wooly Worm I've ever encountered.  Hope it's prophetic.

Looks like the strongest Hurricane Ian wind gust I could find from a weather station was 140 mph at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. All the other stations seem to have failed (because of losing power) or they were too sheltered. These gusts are only from currently reporting stations.

389417284_ScreenShot2022-09-28at7_47_48PM.thumb.png.22d6fc2d251bee2aa256f8b951f15d7a.png

140 mph puts Ian up there with some of the strongest gusts ever directly measured at landfall. Ida last year was measured at 172 mph just off the LA coast, but it was on a boat and a bit higher than 10 meters. On land a station measured 153 mph during Ida. Laura in 2020 was clocked at 153 mph as well in LA while a 139 mph gust was measured in the Florida Panhandle with Michael in 2018. https://www.wunderground.com/article/storms/hurricane/news/2021-08-30-hurricane-ida-172-mph-wind-gust-among-us-strongest

In terms of storm surge, the Fort Meyers station ended up measuring a peak height of 7.26'. For context the previous high water mark was 3.36' from Hurricane Gabrielle in 2001. However, this doesn't mean that much because surge is so dependent on location. As has already been mentioned, Tampa which was just a few miles to the north, recorded a negative tide due to the pressure and wind, so you would really need a hurricane to hit in the exact same location to get a comparable storm surge.

We'll also probably end up seeing evidence of surge 12-15'+ in places where the tide isn't continuously measured.

Just amazing how chopped up the jet stream is on this GFS run.  Maybe it will just be slow all fall and winter.  Could be good for cold once the atmosphere gets into it's winter La Nina mode.  I can't wait to see where this goes.

Pretty funny that some think a slow jet in the winter can't equate to cold.  Our January problem has been too much jet.

Getting some solid convection outside right now. We had a flash and a loud boom that was almost instantaneous which shook the house. Son is wide awake now but hoping he can go back to sleep since he stayed home yesterday. He likes the storm. Much better than I when I was young. Lightning was my top fear as a kid

If summer is going to be extended on one side... I would have much preferred this in May when the days are so much longer.     I would gladly take a summery May and a stormy October over what we had this year which was winter in May and now apparently summer in October.

I am unusually jealous of your rain total.   We barely had enough to wet the ground here early yesterday afternoon.

Since June 20th... the North Bend station has had one day with more than .05 and that was July 3rd when we had .20 and total rain in that period of just .37 which is record setting dry.

There have only been 7 days in the last 103 days with measurable rain out here and 6 of those days were just a passing shower with barely enough to measure.   Truly the complete opposite of late March through mid June.

I am unusually jealous of your rain total.   We barely had enough to wet the ground here early yesterday afternoon.

We’ve had about 1.25” of rain since July 1st, unusual for it to be wetter down here in this period, though it has still been below average.
