First, September in California is still a very warm month.

Second, my statement was general: it did not pertain only to September. It is more likely to happen in July or August than September.

Correction: First, Every month in California is still a very warm month.

That is the biggest reason I left in 2005. 🤢

I tried living there for about a year and missed the variety of temperature one gets in the PMW. Just felt continually adrift. It’s 65 and sunny, could be January, could be July. Plus less rain means less forests means less shady hikes.

Now, coastal California is hardly all of California, but the economic opportunity there is HEAVILY concentrated in the big coastal metro areas that have the sorts of climate we are talking about. Might well have stayed in CA if it was easy to find work in the Tahoe or Mt. Shasta areas (or particularly the Redwood Coast north of SF).

The three biggest cities in the state that get regular snowfall are South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Susanville. Not exactly lots of options to find work locally in those places.

I have to admit, I am ready for fall!  The last few weeks of above 90 degree temps have wiped me out.  However I will certainly say that this summer has been more active than the last 2 have combined. Along with the 5 or so T-Storms that each dropped a ton of rain over the summer has been a welcome and needed godsend. So far for the year, I am at 10.99" of precip which is not too shabby.  As for the nasty smoke, we got really lucky to have clearer skies all through August, which almost never happens, even though September is another story.  How did your summer turn out for you Kayla?

Yeah it's been a brutal stretch and I'm also SO ready for Fall! Have already hit 93F today...on September 7th!! I agree though, even though summer was well above average it was a pretty pleasant summer with well timed rainfalls throughout and no wildfire smoke! I'm up to nearly 17" of precip on the year so far so still tracking a bit above average as well.

As long as we avoid a bunch of new fire starts today I'll be content with how this summer turned out.

It doesn’t get the regular snows*, but the redwood coast from about Mendocino northwards would have also worked. Same basic story with regard to economic opportunity as the mountains, however. I did once interview for a job at Humboldt State University in Arcata. Would have been great had I got it, but I didn’t.

 * Occasional snows do happen, though. I have once taken a hike in the coast redwoods in the snow. Really hit the weather jackpot to have lowland snow happen during the time I was there. It's fun to tell people about my redwoods-in-the-snow experience it then have them do a double-take when they realize it's the coast redwoods I'm talking about having seen in the snow.

My former boss is Canadian, and the now retired Chief Engineer is British.. they loved to team up and give us crap about spelling differences and how we spelled things wrong.  I pretty much started throwing a 'u' after the 'o' in all of my emails them.  😁

I also used to give the Chief Engineer crap, telling him that the reason why our metal expenditures was so high (I was the project cost analyst) was because he always called for Al-you-min-ee-um instead of regular 'ole aluminum.
