That ash was probably part of a tree in the Cascades at dawn this morning.

I cannot believe how much hotter Seattle got.  90F as a high and still 82F.  That is mind-blowing to me considering we could barely hit 70 and are already down to 63.

Seattle spent the day in the sweet spot in between two massive smoke plumes.   But even PDX managed 89 under a thick smoke shield today.

Side note... the high was actually 92 at SEA.

I still say (myself) KSEA doesn't speak for the entirety of Seattle nor the City/Downtown itself. BFI will always be more representative. And KRNT for Renton

The east wind at SEA also cleared out some of the smoke... visibility went from 4 to 7 miles when it arrived.     And I can tell you that its a very warm east wind.

We hit 91.4 here. Pretty much downtown Renton but elevation of sea tac. Not as east exposed as most of the Renton highlands but more north exposed like the airport is.

Will the smoke allow temps to cool tonight?

Smoke does not trap warm air... but it blocks sunlight.    So smoky inversions end up being cool at night and during the day.    The only reason its still so warm in places is because of exposure to the east wind which should fade overnight.

A few smoky days a year... much better than other places across the west.     And its so boring geologically east of the Rockies.

Just a note to everyone.  As said earlier, conditions will WORSEN over night most of Western Washington, Western Oregon, and the Lower Mainland. You will see the AQI levels spike in the night hours and into the morning.

Hopefully we will get good news on the models and start cleaning up the air a bit tomorrow.  But for most, the skies will not clear up Sunday or even Monday.  The media is wrong (or purposely posting false hope).  While I don't think this will be even remotely close as bad as the 2020 Smoke-aggeddon, it could linger longer than we are being told.  I remember in 2020, the media kept saying it would flow away, and it just never did.  If we don't get that wind shift in any significant fashion tomorrow and into Monday, there are no strong pushes after that till the end of next week, meaning smoke could linger.

Here are the last two satellite images before it got too dark to see.

I looked at some web cams along the Oregon coast before sunset and the sun was shining there and it did not look too hazy at all.   I don't think that top satellite truly depicts the situation on the ground.

Also hopeful looking at the water vapor loop showing more moist air surging inland and the ECMWF showing a decent SW wind tomorrow.

At least for now visibility improved quite a lot at SEA… back up to 10 miles but this is surface level stuff. Pretty sure it’s still nasty higher.

Wind shifted to south at SEA and temp dropped 8 degrees.

What the actual HECK.  I am standing here watching fireworks go off at the Tulalip Indian Reservation. And not just a few, but several now for the past five minutes. Do they want to start a fire?  What the heck?  Do the people firing off fireworks not realize the situation going on?

Wtf fire just jumped US 2 straight thru the heart of Baring. Index is at level 3 evac now. My house is still level 1. I thought east winds were calming what happened

Sadly no.  Winds are still blowing quite well eastward.  It will continue into tomorrow as well.  This is horrible news to hear. :(

Insane. I need to mow but there was no way I was going to since I was worried I might hit a rock and cause a spark. Seems like so much common sense is lost these days.

00Z GFS now looks more like the 12Z GEM.    Of course the 00Z GEM probably won't look like the 12Z GEM.

But a huge westward shift from the 12Z GFS to the 00Z GFS...
