Pretty close to average precip on the year now for most locations.

YearPNormWRCC-NW.png

Which is pretty impressive, considering summer anomalies (no matter how extreme) represent a very small percentage of overall precip during the year.

I'll still take this year.  We're still in a darker shade of green. The wet spring made a huge difference in my corner of state. In 2020 we moved to our area (Idaho side) at the start of summer and there were a few wildfires that started on the Palouse and a decent sized one near Army Corps property in Asotin/Whitman county. In 2021 there were a ton of major wildfires in every county near mine. We had three fires within 20 miles at the same time and were briefly threatened (no evac) by one. At the same time there was a huge fire just south of Lewiston in Idaho.  Columbia, Walla Walla, and Whitman counties had several fires. This year there were a few sparks but all the fires were downed quickly. The other major fire in my general area (within 1 hr drive) was one by Central Ferry (Whitman County on the other side of the snake river). Property damage wasn't too bad but it did close a state highway for a few days.

SEA was around -5.0 for both April and May and only +2.1 and +2.6 for July and August.

Spring was much more anomalously cold than summer was anomalously warm there.

That’s not how it works. Summer temperatures are generally more consistent. When we went over the PRISM data which goes back to 1895, April and May were more anomalously cold and wet down here. Maybe summer was not quite as hot up there by historical standards, but I think it was close. And whatever SeaTac ranked is kind of irrelevant when we have a much more comprehensive dataset at our disposal.

That is relative to the new 1991-2020 normals. Also, standard deviations for temperature departures vastly decrease during the summer months. You know this.

I don't know that... I just go by departure from average by month.    April and May were farther from normal on the cold side than July and August were on the warm side at SEA.    That is just math.

I get that its a warming climate though... there is no debate on that.    So if you are comparing to 125 year averages then this spring probably lines up closer to long term climo than this summer.   But that is a moving target because the climate is warming long term.

I honestly don't.

The farther from normal the more extreme... regardless of season.    But if we are trying to compare to averages going back to the 1800s then good luck because everything will be warmer.

And July/August 2022 aren't major outliers for this decade, while April/May were the first really cool/wet ones since 2011 I think. Even then it doesn't make it on the top 5 at PDX.

Hottest July/August periods at PDX:

 2. 2018 - 73.1
 3. 2015 - 73.1

In my opinion, it's not fairly balanced when the the cold April/May was one of two this decade, while we've had multiple July/Augusts that have been very warm (and not to mention April/May 2016, 2019, 2018, 2020, 2014 or 2015 which were the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th warmest on record at SeaTac)

I have some terrible news to share.

My fiancees son was in a terrible motorcycle accident last week and had been on life support, we lost him today.

I feel terrible and I'm sick to my stomach watch my best friend and love go through this, a parent shouldn't have to ever go through this it shouldn't be allowed to happen in nature. He was only 24 years old and his name was Adam. You people on here have always been good friends and offer good support so I figured I should share this on here. If anyone has ever been through this, loosing a child please pm me as I have no idea how to support her or what to do I know when I lost my wife I wanted to be left alone. She's going through the worst thing that can to a Person.  This hurts.

Nice timing with the troughing tomorrow into Friday... should clear out all the smoke and then the ECMWF shows wall-to-wall sun all weekend.   Should be really nice and it's unlikely offshore flow will bring back the smoke to any significant degree

If I was a rain lover... I would have been pretty concerned about a summer into fall payback by the end of May.   It was too extreme.

The precip up north was less extreme than the temps in April and May. For your area it was like 30th wettest April per PRISM.  But either way, I don’t think this summer was payback for anything. If it worked that way last summer would have had record breaking rainfall to make up for the record dry spring. I would posit we are going to pretty much always torch in the summer now no matter how the previous summer, fall, winter, and spring worked, and despite ENSO. Even the much ballyhooed summer of 2019’ was much warmer than our historical average.

This hurts.

So sorry man, I don’t know that anything I can say would help, but y’all are in my thoughts.

That is relative to the new 1991-2020 normals. Also, standard deviations for temperature departures vastly decrease during the summer months. You know this.

To be fair both April and May would’ve been cool even by 19th century standards.

This is as early as I can ever recall autumn beginning. Still can’t believe it’s happening.

Usually we have to wait until mid/late October for that first big push of cool/dry air. Instead it’s coming tomorrow.

October hurricanes can be fun with the crazy phasing turns they sometimes take on once they reach the mid latitudes and become extratropical and interact with the jet stream. Obviously not a likely scenario there but there certainly are some examples of crazy stuff like that happening during the month (Typhoon Frida in 1962, Hazel in 1954, Sandy in 2012, the big UK storm in 1987, the Perfect Storm in 1991).
