AQI in Darrington is 489 according to my phone. 174 here - looks as bad as it has at any time this season. Crazy.

489 could be lethal for some people.  Even here I feel a bit queasy after being out in it.

Alternative would be putting Bend in the Medford office. Sunriver and La Pine would, tbh, make more sense with Medford than Pendleton, but the high desert from Bend northwards is Columbia Basin in my mind.

Well you all know my feeling that NWS Spokane should take Clearwater and Idaho counties in ID from NWS Missoula since those two counties typically have weather related to Spokane's area. Orofino and Grangeville also should not be in the same zone area as there is 2k ft difference in elevation. They are outlier counties as they are on the other side of a Mtn range to MT and other than Riggins, are in Pacific rather than Mtn time.

For those curious, I attended a conference for emergency managers in western Canada where a group of climatologists provided their top analogues for this winter - it seems that they factored in quite a bit into their analysis. These were the top analogues:

1. 1985-86

2. 1975-76

3. 2000-01

4. 1971-72

5. 2021-22 (last winter)

6. 2001-02

7. 2012-13

Interesting list with quite a mix of outcomes.  Up your way I know 2001-02 was a good one too.  I really think 1988-89 should be there too.  Just too many matches from an observed weather and synoptic standpoint.

Definitely. My wife has asthma and has been using her inhaler pretty much daily. It’s kind of weird how it impacts her differently day to day. A couple days ago she was having a pretty tough time, today she seems fine.

Visibility is quickly dropping here. AQI just hit 300, and the smoke is so thick that it looks more like fog down the street. Only 64 degrees at the moment.

It appears the smoke has gotten a lot shallower here over the past hour.  I can see the blue sky again.

Just a reminder that today's epic #schmokeunderperformance still resulted in a high temperature 8F above normal. One that doesn't even feel cool on the skin... just "not hot."

I ended up with 65/42.  Kind of coolish.

PDX south, I am so so sorry, but you've still a day left of this torrid season. 70s and smoke for the overachievers; probably around the PDX area.

Seattle remains cloudy and cool (actually around average for this time of year), with spotty drizzle and rapidly improving air quality.

The weekend trough looks slightly chillier and a bit drier than some earlier runs had indicated.  Should be a lot of places dropping into the 30s for lows.

I used to LOVE that game. Similar mechanics as Monopoly.

They would always have a set amount of turns too. Monopoly gets boring after about 5-10 turns.

It’s cleared significantly here, too. I can see the mountains again. Mind you, it’s still pretty nasty out there. Just not as nasty as it was this morning.

I’ll trade the cold and dry for a bit warmer and juicer system. We need rain, not colder and drier.

Looking at my area's historical average first frost. Today is Oct 19th. By 10/19/22 there is a 90% chance we would have had at least a 32F frost. We have yet to see even 36F.

That big pumpkin from last years pic lasted until the big thaw the first of January…Unfortunately it started leaking/rotting quickly when it thawed and left a stain that you can still see in today’s picture!

At first scan, I thought this was 489 dm 500mb thicknesses, which I guess would also be deadly for some people in this region but perhaps more enjoyable than the smoke.
