Those were all bonafide El Niño years, though.

End of October could still change things up. Though in the grand scheme of things, this doesn’t look like a winter that’ll have a strong pacific jet.

So maybe you’re due for climo.

It almost never works that way after something this whacked out.  Most cases that are anything like this came out of it with either abnormal cold or a deluge.

I honestly can't decide whether I am more annoyed or intrigued by all of this.  We are way out on the fringes of anything that has ever happened in the period of record right now.

This winter is going to be WILD! The festivities will begin the first week of November. Flooding rains, then a major arctic event, then a windstorm for the ages! Christmas will be sunny with highs around 50. January will be epic, then early spring by the second week of February.

It’s why I suspect a very Niño-like winter is coming for us.

That wouldn't make sense, but anything is possible.  We are still going to have La Nina forcing in the tropics.  The only Nina that ever acted like a true Nino was 1933-34 and that was a way different context than this year.

I don't think it will necessarily be Niño-like everywhere, but I think it will be here. I.e. milder and drier than normal.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Guessing a person could just step back when they feel rumbling.   But if its that bad then we have much bigger problems!

I will say to his defense they usually begin with a sudden drop or thud feeling (as if someone dropped something heavy in the house) then the rolling motion. At least for the small ones cause that’s all I’ve ever felt! But yeah, pretty unlikely the stone work just comes crashing down immediately.

My experience has been the sound of rumbling in the distance and then it starts shaking.   But I have only experienced 3 or 4 that I distinctly remember.  The biggest being the Northridge quake in 1994 which happened at 4:30 a.m. and was my first.   I could hear that one coming and it woke me up about 1/2 a second before it literally shook us out of bed.   I was sure it was centered in San Diego based on the intense shaking and was surprised to find out it was 150 miles away.

We had a 5.8 near Helena in July 2017 that woke us up with a thud then the roll motion. Of course all the YNP ones as well but it’s usually just a small thud with those and no roll. I was also in Christchurch NZ in 2012 working and the aftershocks there were no joke! Still the same anvil drop sensation and sound before the roll.

It depends on how far from the epicenter you are. If there is some distance, then yes, that is the case. What you have felt is the p-waves (compressional), which travel faster than the s-waves (transverse). The latter carry most of the energy, so the former can serve as a warning. I have felt the same thing (When it happened, I spent a few seconds wondering “was that a p-wave?” before I found out the answer was YES.)

That’s how the 2011 quake started here. Heard it before I felt it. Thought it was a low flying chopper or construction at first, then stuff started shaking and I noped the f**k outside. 😂

Of course that was only a 5.9. Can’t imagine what a 7+ would feel like. And hopefully never will.

Not really a fan favorite around here but we are pulling some remarkable weather around here for this time of the year. We haven't had an 80F weather in decades and now pulled out 75+F weather for the first time ever in October. Love it or hate it, I think you gotta appreciate this anomalous stretch. We should be in the mid-60s for this time of year, so this is quite an extreme we're dealing with.
