Has the PNW ever had a "heat dome"-esque event?

Recommended Posts

While I doubt heat domes like the ones east of the Rockies can occur on this part of the continent, that doesn't mean there could potentially have been heat events with some characteristics of a heat dome--high pressure smothering a large area and keeping out any cooler weather or moisture. August 1981, July 1994, July 2006, July 2009, August 2012, June 2013 might be candidates.

Probably too much marine influence to see something like what they experience back east.  If you are looking for events to study, July 1958 may top your list.

From what I've heard they can occur, but it is unusual and the heat domes don't last long.

I think July 1941 would be a good contender.  Several days of extreme heat (for this area) with Seattle topping out at 100 and a couple of hot humid days with spectacular lightning.
