3rd consecutive record lows for the south valley. Really nice stretch of brilliant cold nights under the stars.

Big January that year.

Actually it was quite mild and wet. Most wouldnā€™t consider that a ā€œbigā€ January when compared to those like 1950 or 1969 which both featured a considerable amount of cold/snow in the lowlands.

Looks like a relatively rare consistently cold winter is on the table this year. Something like 1978-79, 1948-49, 1916-17, 1984-85 or some kind of a variation on those themes.Ā  Looking at record lows in WA this month most if not all of these seasons have popped up.Ā  They were all very blocky seasons obviously.

Progression kinda reminds me of 2005.

The recent clear windstorm was certainly like Dec 2005.Ā  What we have already had is like December 2005, but what is apparently coming takes a different path than we did that season.

Big, persistent ridge during the heart of November 2005 followed by a period of cool/cold troughing.Ā

17 inches of snow here in one night in early December 2005.Ā  Ā  Ā Then a couple weeks of relentless wind and then it turned just a wee bit wet for 6 weeks.

It can potentially happen for usā€¦ all we need is a potent arctic airmass meeting an AR. Would love to see that sometimes.Ā

That's what happened in January 1880 and it was pandemonium.Ā  Widespread 4 to 6 foot totals.Ā  I have really examined that event and it's obvious between the first and second intense low pressure systems we were in a baroclinic zone.Ā  Remarkably there was enough of an Arctic air tap to turn all of that water into lowland snow.Ā  I can't even imagine what the totals may have been a bit inland when totals were 4 to 6 feet at sea level.

That was one of the greatest lowland snowstorms in the history of the United States.Ā  This statement applies to what they call system snow back East.Ā  Lake effect is a different animal.

Where is VN?

No way to know yet.Ā  A lot of it may be dry cold if the persistent cold winter happens.Ā  Most of those do have a couple of periods of snow though.

Pretty interesting winter with a very meridional start followed by an epically consistent period of onshore flow (55 consecutive + anomalies at PDX) followed by another period of strong meridional stuff.

This stretch of sunny days and cold nights have been perfect. Ā I love the cold morning and the sunny days, especially in the winter when things can get a bit depressing.

I hope we get another stretch like this but with a few inches of snow on the ground. Ā Wouldn't that be great?

In a year of weird extremes and ridging it just feels right that we are going to get nailed.

Hammer time anyone?
