The E/NE winds help with precip rates and helps with cold air damming. I don't get as excited by arctic blasts as most do because they are sometimes too dry for significant snow. Give me normal temps and average to above average precip and I get a lot of snow. Easy to say on that side of the mountains. I would root for blasts over there too, because of record low potential. 2 1 Death To Warm Anomalies! Mins temps are usually a lot colder too, because we don't have east winds to deal with. Right now this thing looks top tier for this early in the season. That is other than events like 1955 and 1985. Backdoor blasts are boring for the Puget Sound. Would love a strong Arctic front dropping down with heavy snow. 2

I think Portland had a good 2-5" storm in late December 2009. And in January 2016 we actually had a subfreezing high with around an inch of snow. Don't think we had any snowflakes in 2014/15 though 2

I don't mind arctic blasts, and it certainly preserves the snow and is interesting from a weather geeks point of view, but I do prefer snow. Maybe a blast followed eventually by wet systems in December. I could live with that, but worst case ridging develops over us for boring weather. 1

The nice thing about it was that I was living in Portland at the time, and it was the only blast during my time there that did not involve a big snow or ice storm in the Gorge, and it was still going strong when the weekend hit, so I was at long last able to drive into the Gorge and see the iced-up waterfalls. 5 1 It's called clown range for a reason.
