This run is pretty compelling to say the least.

As far apart as the GFS and EURO have been I just can't believe any of this unless 12z EURO/EPS show notable changes. I want to, but yeah.

It's like what the ECMWF showed late in the run.  Just happens sooner.

Currently 47 and a bit gusty outside. Looks like that will probably be the high for the day because it looks to cool off once this cold front comes through.

Next Sunday looks a bit close to Dec 1968 with the way a fat polar lobe creeps close to the area.

That event of course is the granddaddy of all polar lobe sneaks. Low level outflow during that event brought the region its coldest airmass ever recorded by far, even colder than some of the airmasses seen in Jan 1950. Seattle spent two days in the teens and Winthrop recorded an apocalyptic -48F; Washington's coldest temperature ever recorded. Not going to come close to repeating that.

In the 2020’s climate, what would it take to repeat 1950 even if impossible? All of interior Alaska’s and Canada’s coldest winter air to make it to our coast without warming up, somehow making it past the Rockies?

I can't believe I totally missed this.... Sharp, potent cold front just ripped through! Instant 6F drop with heavy rain, hail, and wind. Maybe some lightning too?

January 1950 was a product of an incredible amount of luck and seasonal-scale leaning. Everything pointed towards PNW troughing that month. If it were to repeat again, I imagine the results would be similar, but around 3-6F warmer give or take, around the going rate of wintertime AGW in the Arctic today compared to the mid 20th century, combined with the warming effects of urbanization. Lows would be much more moderated than the highs. Still would be around the coldest month ever recorded had it occurred today, perhaps being much more competitive with January 1949.
