Sustained winds of 28mph from the ESE at PDX so probably some much higher gusts. Here's some data from the Bethany COOP station during that month. One of the files is hourly temperature, one of them is hourly wind speed and the other is data for the month. 12/7 on the 30th (Officially it says 15/7 but that's probably because the station's recording time) with 8.0" of snow and sustained winds of 30mph from the NE for three hours straight, probably some gusts much higher. What's even crazier is that the next month, they recorded a sustained wind speed of 35mph from the NE with another huge dumping of snow IPS-2A9AF0BC-957D-4E92-90B5-6FED87701C8D.pdf 1.5 MB · 1 download IPS-8A6A9DAA-1CD6-4522-A924-03FFB84D9DC3.pdf 1.88 MB · 0 downloads IPS-482F7E64-E3F2-4667-9979-2D539959809E.pdf 1.5 MB · 0 downloads Very detailed remarks too. 26th: Overcast occasional sprinkle - Arctic Air N Washington 27th: OVC SB 5PM melted as fell, 2" West hills 28th: OCNL SW - Cold arctic air to north of PDX 29th: Roads icy, east winds 30th: Blizzard conditions in area, W Union Rd closed to drifts to 2' deep. 31th: Sleet till noon, mdt ZR after ice on all things 1/4" thick. Dave
My most interesting wind story was from somewhere around 2001-2003. Can't remember the exact date. The internet wasn't quite what it is today. My good friend wanted to go fishing on the Sixes river in southern Oregon for fall Chinook. He found a nice affordable cabin at Cape Blanco State park, right next to the Sixes river. We knew the forecast was shitty. Strong storm moving in, but the Sixes clears out quicker after a storm than other nearby rivers. Could be some wind too. We arrived at the cabin and it was rustic, but nice and the wind started picking up. Nothing huge. After a couple of hours we decided to go check it out at the end of the road here: https://www.google.com/search?q=42.836554783370005%2C+-124.5625672606686&rlz=1C1OPNX_enUS932US932&oq=42.836554783370005%2C+-124.5625672606686&aqs=chrome..69i57.87852673j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 When we got there, the wind was crazy extreme. I've never experienced anything like it. His truck (a lowish profile 2wd Ford Ranger) was oscillating in the wind like a grizzly bear was shaking it. I told him, bro we gotta get out of here. He agreed and we parked up the road a bit where the wind wasn't so extreme. We walked back down to the end of the road and the wind was incredible. There was no rain and for the most part, no huge gusts. It was just constant. I could lean back into the wind as if sitting in a chair with complete comfort or lean into the wind at a severe angle. It was so much fun. I'll never forget it. I was able to confirm the wind got to over 110mph that night after I got home. Good times. 3

Doinko
December 1983 also had the huge Enumclaw/Buckley windstorm I think, maybe that might have been one of the strongest east wind events in some areas in the past 50 years. 2
Dave
Ok. I lied. I have one more wind related story that I was reluctant to post because it sounds like made up bullshitt. I was living in the Portland area in Dec 1995 when that huge windstorm hit. I was able to experience it for a couple of hours before I had to work - my second job ever. Had a late afternoon starting shift. I was working at Stadium Fred Meyer in Portland. I absolutely loathed the fact that I was indoors and couldn't experience the storm in it's full glory, but this happened. I was working in the Home Electronics department selling TV's, etc. A huge wind gust came into the store and knocked all kinds of crap off the shelf near the entrance when the automatic doors opened. Suddenly, the power went off and the store went completely dark. Some crackhead grabbed a TV/VCR combo from our display shelf and tried to steal it. He grabbed it and made his way to the exit. However, the automatic doors didn't work due to the power outage. After a few more seconds, the automatic generators kicked on and the lights came back and the doors started working again. Security was already at the door and nabbed him the second he ran out. The TV was ruined but the story made it absolutely worth it. 7
Meatyorologist
1 hour ago, Gradient Keeper said: Since we're talking about east winds.... Years ago I went up to the Vista House with 3 other friends. When we left my house around 2 AM the winds were gusting 40-50mph. As we headed east further into Gresham it was a bit stronger. Along Scenic Highway the usual lull until we climbed up the hill from Springdale into Corbett where the gusts were blowing the car into the other lane precariously close to off the road completely. Thank God there were no other vehicles out. Easily 70mph+. The 3 mile trek from Corbett to the Vista House was wild branches and debris down everywhere. We get to the parking lot east facing of course and the wind was unbelievable. It was difficult to even open the door, but finally we manage to get out of the car. I remember standing maybe 15-20' from the car in the parking lot and it was windy, but no big gusts... yet. Then I heard a horrific roar building to the east it took seconds to reach us, and wow. I've never heard anything like that it was so violent and deafening. I stood and changed my stance to brace for the wind gusts and I was blown around like nothing. I'm not slight build either. The gusts blasted through, then an eerie brief lull, and then the next round of horrific roar building. It was terrifying sounding and even louder than the previous 4-5. It must have been a peak gust. This time it blew me off balanced pushing me right up the stairs slamming me into the glass doors of the Vista House. I had to wait for the relative next lull to manage my way to the railing along the southeast facing stairs. My other friends remained much closer to the car lol. It took a human chain of the 4 of us to be able to get back to the car. I have no doubt the gusts were 120mph or higher as I've been up there in 70-90mph winds which are crazy strong, but didn't hold a candle to that night. I think the highest peak gust ever measured with a handheld was 122mph? and on the sensor itself on the building 104? which equates to 120-130mph along the southeast facing stairs. It was truly an amazing experience, exhilarating, terrifying for the first 15-20 minutes, and I would love to do it all over again! Wow!!!!! So jealous of this experience.
