The last time Shawnigan Lake was skateable outside of the small protected bays

It was senior year for me so the shock and awe is even more intense.  Such a fun winter…

Yes. Some places in Whatcom County (kendal and maple falls) had 3 feet of snow. Most places had 1-2’ though in Feb 2017 after a cold January in which the northern corner of Lake Whatcom froze all the way across. We skated on it!

That was a truly special day. Can’t have been possible more than a handful of times in the last fifty years.

Yes. We had a nice stretch in February that year.  Pretty widespread.

I guess that is what I was remembering. 2017 was a sucky winter in central Puget Sound. Cold, no snow, pretty much everyone else scored big in either January or February.

I’m sure most here are sick of my stories, but for the newer crowd…I got my license 30yrs ago next week! Took my drivers test with snow falling! Quickly learned how to drive in a lot of slippery conditions with the worst possible vehicle to do so in! I loved every second of it!

It was a ‘71 Buick Skylark for me. The old state trooper we bought it from was a cheapskate and didn’t spring for the traction control and lane keep assist trim level.

Higher elevations of metro Vancouver had a lot of snow in December 2016 IIRC. I seem to remember some wild pictures of huge snowbanks on the Canadian forum.  “Catnip” had a couple feet I bet.

Mine was a huge '70 Dodge Polara station wagon with lots of rust but a 383 engine that still kicked *ss. Lots of fun getting dirty looks from people in newer, nicer cars with smaller engines as I would zoom up mountain passes and blow past them at speeds their vehicles could not manage on long upgrades.

I don’t really think we follow 2005s script, but it seems like we might see a “blockier” winter than we have seen in some years. That 84-85’ analog may not be terrible.

Ya I had similar thoughts.  Weeklies have been painting a colder than normal stretch kicking in mid Dec through the end of the year.  Figured we'd see more moderation in the interim.

Though they never really showed us torching either… so the deep freeze may still be just beyond the horizon.

The early December period has been a good window in many of our great winters.

Got down to 34 last night. Didn’t get any precip. I’m excited but also kind of surprised that we could be going back into another period of cold weather soon. I honestly thought we would be waiting until at least the second half of December before the models started showing something like this again.

What surprises me most about that winter is I remember everyone to the south getting all the goods it felt like the Portland area was getting snow event after snow event and then the one snowstorm in Feb happened and it actually managed to get SEA tied with PDX that winter on snowfall.

My driving test was in a 67 Chevelle 396 4 speed, I will never forget when the instructor said to accelerate!  I down shifted into 2nd and let her rip lol.

Believe my dad had a 68.  Goal one day is to get one myself and have it restored.
