Tom
We are heading into the Winter season and the snows have already began to fall. Who will be the big winners this year??? Courtesy to Geo's map below, I think it's a good time to kick off our regional Snowfall Contest. There are 18 stations within the Midwest/Southern Plains/Great Lakes where all members; I hope, reside close by to one (at least within a 100 miles). Here is the map which was created with airport codes of each station. For the contest, pick a snowfall tally you think each airport station will end up with at the end of the season. Below is the average seasonal snowfall total of each place. GRI (Grand Island, NE) 29.0" FSD (Sioux Falls, SD) 44.5" OMA (Omaha, NE) 26.4" AAO (Wichita, KS) 14.7" TUL (Tulsa, OK) 9.7" MCI (Kansas City, MO) 18.8" STL (St. Louis, MO) 17.7" DSM (Des Moines, IA) 34.9" MLI (Moline/Quad Cities, IL/IA) 33.5" LSE (La Crosse, WI) 46.1" MSP (Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN) 50.6" AUW (Wausau, WI) 59.6" MKE (Milwaukee, WI) 49.2" ORD (Chicago, IL) 38.1" IND (Indianapolis, IN) 25.9" GRR (Grand Rapids, MI) 77.1" DTW (Detroit, MI) 44.8" CLE (Cleveland, OH) 67.2" All average snowfall are the 30 year average between 1981-2010. Three tiebreakers, just in case... #1: Greatest snowfall; in one storm, for Omaha, NE (OMA). #2: December snowfall total for Chicago, IL (ORD). #3: Snowfall total for Marquette, MI (MQT) in January. jaster220
#3: Greatest lake effect snowfall total for Marquette, MI (MQT) in January. @ Tom Tie-breaker #3 could be a bit tricky. westMJim
For what it is worth here is my winter of 2016/17 snow fall guess. Tom
After reviewing the overall LRC pattern, La Nina analogs, seasonal model trends...I believe anyone north of I-80 stands a very good chance of ending up above normal in the snowfall dept. Jan/Feb period may be the worst part of the Winter season with plenty of clippers from an active northern branch and a combination of an active southern stream. MKE/ORD stand a good chance at higher than normal Lehs/LES due to systems tracking favorably increasing snowfall totals. MI snow belts are going to do very well this season. I think there will be many storms that bomb out and track into SE Canada which will create a N/NW flow off the GL's. This will also bode well for the CLE area as well. Keep in mind this contest will be from First Flake to Last Flake...Spring time snows are going to be a wild card in most of our region. Good luck everyone! Note: If I have a decent bonus check, I don't mind donating cash prizes to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. I'll need to check in with the site's owners if they allow it. Tom
After doing some number crunching, it looks like 1st Place goes to ToastedRavs (he was off by 0.2" for Wausua, WI 60.5" season total), 2nd Place goes to WestJim (he was off by 0.6" for Wausua, WI 60.5" season total)...3rd Place goes to CentralNebWeather (he was off by 2.1" for Wausua, WI). Wausua, WI seemed to be the only city where most came close to the seasonal snowfall total. Ironically, that was the hot spot for snowstorms this entire season. Let me know if anyone differs in these outcomes.
