January 2017 Observations and Discussion

Still haven't made it out of the single digits with some scattered flurries.  Current temp 7F.  Intense cold trying to wring out any moisture out of the atmosphere.

Thats about the only snow you will be seeing for quite awhile so take pics.

Its cold outside today as my readings are pretty much stationary at or just below 12F. A few embedded snowshowers here and there, but that's about it. Overnights low dipping once again in the low single digit territory.

Virginia Beach VA will have about 4x as much as most of us in Nebraska and part of Iowa this year after this weekend. Amazing

And a blizzard warning before most of us on this forum! This has to be a season's worth of snow from one storm for them. I checked their latitude and it was 36 degrees, about the same as OKC.

Here IMBY I received 1.5” of new snow overnight. And now have 4.5” on the ground. With the snow on the ground and on the trees and a temperature of 11° and light snow falling it looks very much like winter at this time

not sure which thread to post into anymore, with the 5+ day and January threads, seems redundant to me, but regardless here it goes.  GFS showing extremely active week coming up next week.  unfortunately for those of us in Iowa, it's mostly going to be a miss until possibly next Friday.

Monday Night/Tuesday - moderate snow for MN & WI

Wednesday - weak clipper with very light snow amounts for N IA and S MN/WI.

Thursday - stronger system that hits much of MN & WI with moderate snows

Friday - stronger system that hits much of IA, the south half of MN, and the NW 3/4's or so of WI with moderate snows, except for where I live, it only shows a couple inches.

Bottom line if you live along and north of a line from Sioux City, IA to Milwaukee, WI the GFS shows several rounds of snow this next week, which could really lay down a deep snow pack. Areas to the south of this line, look to get some snow, but it tapers off quickly, so less likely.

Normally, anything 5+ days out we typically post in the other Thread geared for that.  We actually have been discussing about the systems you just mentioned.  I'll transfer your post into the 5+ day thread.  Thanks

Big snowstorm up and down the I-95 corridor. In NYC, my family and friends are telling me that they are expecting 7-11inches. Winterstorm Warnings are out for all 5 boroughs of NYC. Boston is in on this also.

Light snow currently falling with everything whiten up a bit. Now, where is this disturbance coming from?! I am thinking from a stretched lake effect band that made it across the state. Sweet! :)

@Niko. Not sure where that map is from but I know for sure that it's inaccurate. Not only in where the snow cover is, but also by the amount. Specifically here in central Iowa and also in SE Tennessee. Be nice if this was indeed true, sadly it's not

Yeah, I checked Atlanta and they have 0.

The map is completely inaccurate

I agree...but, then I was thinking about Helena that dumped snow in the deep south, so, with all of that Arctic air in place, maybe nothing melted. Overall,I do think that this map is overdone. Then again, who knows.

Y'all better rethink your answers on the snowfall map above because my friends grandmother lives in the Crestview area in the far northwestern tip of Florida and she told him that they had 3/4 of an inch of snow reported, followed by sleet and temps dipped into the 20s for lows. Even I was a bit hesitant about that map for a bit. That is the same system that pounded the I-95 corridor with snow. Parts of Cap Cod ova a foot.

Going off major airport or metro sites like Midway can paint a false picture, especially when talking small amounts falling in marginal conditions. Certainly there's been times when warm ground nuked depths downtown Chicago but surrounding areas had snow on the ground. I just use Chicago as a closer example of Atlanta.

The map says I have 4-8 on the ground. Its wrong. You really think all of iowa has snowcover?

For an "advanced member" you're so confusing. You speak of Iowa but thought u were in MN? Is it too much trouble to put a simple location in your settings? Should be mandatory really. Perhaps as Mod, Tom can see that and it's not annoying to him. Idk? Maybe it's just me..

Jaster- add this clown to your "ignore" list and it will make for a much more enjoyable experience. Only time I have to see him now is when someone else quotes one of his witty replies in their post. It's not perfect, but certainly an improvement.

Getting light snow here good sized flacks with a temperature of 18° Still hanging in there with 4” on the ground here. So while not a lot it is enough to make it look like mid-winter.  Also of note is that there was a water line break on one of the streets over by were my one son lives so the cold now is deep into the ground.

I am in southeast mn. north of st charles by 10 miles or so. I have 2 to maybe 4 in places with plenty of bare ground. I was referring to his map that shows all of iowa snowcovered and its not even close.

Ok, so write that on your settings so that people know where you are located.

HEADLINES Baby!!!  :D

Only 23 days since my last synoptic snow fell, I really hope this ISN'T the LRC for Marshall the rest of the season, lol

4 days of on-n-off LES netted another 3.6" of mega-fluff. Sans the LES, this would be a pathetic pace actually trailing behind the past 2 slow-starters.

Through January 9th mby totals:

2016-17 = 16.4" (synoptic only, see my sig for total)

2015-16 = 18.2"

2014-15 = 20.4"

Pretty good returns showing up in N IL...might snow at a decent clip for a couple hours around here.  Looks like the snow drought streak will end today.  One of the longest streaks of snow-less days in between snow events.  I think the number is up to 21 days without measurable snow since yesterday.

The only model that I have seen showing us getting snow today is the RGEM so looks like it was spot on.

Radar looking good over your way, which should bode well for us further east. This might be the better surprise opportunity of all these marginal systems over the next 2-3 wks, at least over here in MI.

Per this just updated NWS map, this looks SO close to starting about 10 pm and going a full 9 hrs until about 7 am. It'll be up to lift and rates I suppose in the end, and those have been better for SEMI than mby this season so far.

It's sad to hear the iconic CA Sequoia "Tunnel Tree" got toppled down from the powerful storm yesterday. I wanted to go visit this site during the Spring. Bummer

Wow! That would be one Krazy "timber!!" Yeah, sad day! They say droughts end with a flood, eh?

For the Thursday system, my temps are forecasted to be colder now (mid to upper 30s) then what it previously had (mid 40s). Interesting indeed!??!!
