2017 California/Southwest Weather Thread

As of 2:30 a.m., it is still 90 degrees here in Orange with a moderate Santa Ana wind. The 2 a.m. Hourly Weather Roundup shows that most Orange County cities that report regularly are in the mid 60's to low 70's where the wind isn't blowing, except that it is 89 in Lake Forest with a Santa Ana breeze. Fullerton Airport is currently 70 degrees and is only about 8-9 miles from my area, so there is a 20 degree temperature difference right now in just a distance of 8-9 miles and the difference is wind vs no wind!

107 at Fullerton and 104 at Ontario Int'l today. Neither place has long-term records but I imagine these are the highest readings so late in the fall for these locations.

At least 104 in Long Beach and 102 in downtown LA, which are both late-season records.

How does this compared to 1939?http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/archives/archives.php?day=30&month=10&year=1939&hour=0&type=ncep&map=0&type=ncep&region=&mode=0October 30th.http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/archives/archives.php?day=31&month=10&year=1939&hour=0&type=ncep&map=0&type=ncep&region=&mode=0

Today's minimum [83F] is the warmest of the year. Some windy areas remained above 90 overnight.  A very hot/ humid heatwave in early September produced a low of 81 on 9/2 and 84° the following morning but dropped to 79F before midnight later that day.

I forgot to mention average highs at this time of year are reduced to the mid 70s so this is really unprecedented.

Highs in the 90's are not unprecedented in Redding at this time of year.

They've hit 99 as late as November 1, 1927. They also reeled off 96-98-97 from October 26-28, 2003.

That was a very impressive ridge. North Bend hit 83 with downslope flow on 10/29/1939, and even Seaside hit 76 on the following day.

The worse of wind/ heat is over without any major wildfires. No smoke in the air has also allowed great views w/ endless visibility, it seems. I like the lowering sun angle of autumn.

Historically the odds favor no more 100 degree days this year.

100/ 78

The West Coast temperature gradient is ridiculous today.  I ended up 57 / 38 today.  100 this time of year just seems wrong.

Death To Warm Anomalies!

Winter 2023-24 stats

It's not pleasant but near negative dew points make it easier to take. I laughed at the comments by the network TV sport announcers describing the heat at Dodger stadium as "muggy" and "humid".

Triple digits again today, but not quite as hot as yesterday. Today is likely the last day in 2017 that we will see temperatures over 100 F here.

I don't believe there will be any more 100's this year, either. The sun angle is getting lower, and the days are getting shorter. It was incredible that we were able to get as hot as it did over the past 3 days, considering the time of year. This must have been an abnormally strong upper high with warm air aloft from the tropics or subtropics, as the flow has been very amplified as of late with a deep trough and cooler than normal weather in Hawaii and hot in California from the ridge pumped up ahead of the low in Hawaii.

Longyearbyen just had their last sunrise (and sunset) of 2017 today and will not see the sun come up again until February 15. For 4 months from about the end of April to the end of August the sun stays above the horizon there. I'd hate to live there.

Meanwhile the days are getting quite short here, which makes our heat wave of the past 3 days extremely unusual.

"Southern California stews in the most extreme heat the nation has seen so late in the year" https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/10/25/southern-california-stews-in-most-extreme-heat-nation-has-ever-seen-so-late-in-year/?utm_term=.1dd03236ef38

"Not one but two locations hit 108 on Tuesday — matching the hottest weather observed on record in the United States so late in the calendar year.

According to the National Weather Service, both Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (formerly known as Miramar Naval Air Station, about 15 miles northeast of San Diego) and San Luis Obispo topped out at 108 degrees."

It only matched the record. It did not break it.

Still quite hot again today, even though we are staying below 100.

The heat is gone and below average temps for the rest of the 10 day forecast with possible rain. Could we see a Halloween Surprise at the last minute?

NWS forecast dry conditions but GFS shows possible subtropical jet energy. Rain would be great relief. Current Wildomar fire [south of Lake Elsinore] is at 700 acres but very light winds.
