March 2017 Observations and Discussion

It's amazing how in the winter, it seemed like every storm track cut hard northwest and left us with no snow or rain first and a little snow.

Now the track has set up way south and is giving us rain on the cool side of all these systems and no real thunder threat. 12Z GFS has a very active southerly storm track too for the next 2 weeks. Had an inch of rain a few days ago, and the storm mid week looks to just give us a cold rain from Tuesday night all the way to Thursday morning. Could see another 1-2" of rain. Not the fast start to severe weather around here yet. Imagine if this could have all been snow!

This region's had the most horrid synoptic pattern in many years. Saw a Toronto area poster on Amwx comment on the fact that even 2011-12 had more +/-1" snows during the heart of winter. Outside of the pre-Christmas stuff, I'd been looking at 2 events, that nice clipper at the end of Jan, and the lameness (for SWMI) back on the 13th.

Ton of complaining in here

Well justified, and I'll add mine. What's happening is total BS! You at least scored some decent synoptic hits. See my post yesterday as to why exactly myself and others that suffered a similar fate are just puking fed up with how this has gone. Anybody that loves snowstorms and has been dealt our hand this winter, can't help but complain. If the passion level for snowstorms is low, well that's another story. Peeps got every right to be unhappy. No, we can't control what Ma Nature tosses our way but we don't have to be content with it either.

Don't blink and miss your sunshine allotment! 2 more solid days of cold strati-form rain about to get rammed down our already water-logged throats! Enjoy buddy

Peeps got every right to be unhappy. No, we can't control what Ma Nature tosses our way but we don't have to be content with it either.

Not only did we not get many hits, but we had to jealously watch the NE get completely hammered by the same storms that brought us rain.

My ideal winter is cold and snowy, and my ideal march is a rapid change to spring. It seems like we're getting the exact opposite. Though I have a feeling I'm not alone in thinking that spring is the worst season in the GL area. It's dreary, wet, muddy, and boring. No snow to play in, no summer stuff to do, no harvests or festivals or anything major.

A lot of us are just jaded. Usually we're somewhat content with winter and excited for summer. Last winter was not good to us, and I at least, was looking forward to this one not being nearly as bad. And we got another bad one, one even worse. I think some of us are here to see and discuss weather we want to see, because we have hobbies or something that's based on the weather. Personally, weather and meteorology is really cool to me, and I enjoy it, but my main reason for being interested in it is trying to make sense of what's affecting my hobbies.

This March was a real bummer. The only thing I enjoyed was how my ski hill was able to hobble together a few more weeks out of the season. Looking at the extended 10 day it seems like April is going to be a lot nicer to us. For me, it looks like we'll round out March with 30s and 40s as a high and rain.

I think a lot of this complaining will go away once we make it through March. I hate to be such a negative nancy, but with the winter being as bad as it was, and an El Nino forming, I'm personally pretty pessimistic about the weather.

This storm takes the perfect track...only if we would have seen this in the Winter and about 10-20 degrees colder!  Looks like the models are showing some Lehs rain along the NE IL shoreline on Friday.  It's going to be a raw, wet, and windy couple days.  Having said that, I'm taking off for AZ Saturday night so I'm not complaining.

Snowing right now if you can believe that, but mostly wet roads. Its holding at a cold, raw, dreary, dismal 35F. If this was winter, along with colder temps, I would have been looking at 18"+. Perfect track for a lot of snow in winter. Go figure!

Well, this month rolled in like a Lion and is exiting like a Lion.  We had some decent days of warm weather but in general it wasn't that pleasant of a month TBH.  We had locally 1-2"+ of rainfall overnight with another 1-2" possible!  Quite the soaker so far.  It's been an interesting, slow moving system.  Tons of severe wx reports down south as this active season continues.

I'll start an April thread in my next post...

  Yeah, I wouldn't complain either if I was doing what you are. When you're headed south to the sun-belt, you want the wx back home to be a miserable as possible!  Enjoy the trip buddy. I posted before I'd gladly deal with the crappy March if we could get a better April this year. But, like others here, this turn-about on synoptic systems just when it's too warm for snow is a real kick in the knuts!

Man, these are some drenching down pours...ponding going on everywhere...ground is soaked city...3rd round or slug (whichever you prefer) of moisture, is building downstate and eye balling our area again for later this evening.

As I type this, I just happen to notice a Flood Advisory has been issued for most of N IL...

I picked up a disappointing 0.76" of rain from this system.  Most runs of most models had an inch to well over an inch falling.  I'm looking forward to seeing more warmth and thunderstorms again after all the cold, gloom, and light rain/drizzle.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

There was some intense wind up here. Big pine trees bending and blowing around. My room mate opened a casement window in the storm and it just kept opening, the wind took it. I don't see any trees down, but it was pretty neat to see.  Bird are out now after the storm, finally the post-storm peace, for now.

Me being the type of person who likes when it's cold and gloomy out, this satisfied me. Our official reading at the airport here was 1.11", although people on the other side of Lincoln picked up around 1.5".

You would have loved it over here today!  I don't mind this type of weather in the middle of the Autumn as it gears me up for Winter, but come this time of year, I'm shedding off the layers and ready for instant Spring.  TBH, I can't wait to head to the pool on Sunday when I'm in AZ and soak up some good ol' vitamin D.

Hopefully, not as wet today. It looks gloomy, wet and cold outside with readings @ 36F. Ouch! Hopefully, the weather cooperates when I visit NYC next month for Easter .

@ Jasta, Y'all get any snow ova there yesterday in your neck of the woods?! I sure did, but, no accumulations. Just a little on car tops and grassy surfaces before the heavy rain rushed in. If it was winter, your area would have been inundated with feet of snow, mine as well. The track was extremely perfect. Where was this track back in the winter, right??!! Go figure with mother nature.

It's like the "cutters" we all were hoping for are now all starting to show up.  There are 2 more back-to-back wet storms next week and the second one (Wed/Thu) may be cold enough to have flakes fly near the Lakes!  Sheesh!

Yup and my area now would have had with next weeks systems near 2 to 3 ft of snow on the ground, if Winter had cooperated with the track. Regarding with the Wed/Thu system next week, looks insane. My forecast has for rain/snow mix changing to all snow at night with minor accumulations....ugh!

I work for a local minor league baseball team (for the Detroit Tigers) and our opening day is next Thursday. If we get rain that will be bad enough but if we snow as well that will only add to the misery. Last year we had 5” of snow on opening day (yes we played the game) the game time temperature was reported as 34° (maybe) there was snow in the stands on the 1st base side and ice cycles from the run off from the roof. But the sun was out and the grounds crew did a great job of clearing off the field. The next days game was call off when we also had snow.
