How much of a toll on snow days was this winter for schools?

Here in Aumsville/Stayon area we had about 3 days according to the news.  I don't go to school as I'm an adult but this sort of reminds me of 2003 which I got a week of snow days but not quite as good and I expected a bit more then this and was let down. 

 

I've heard Portland had like 8 or so mainly due to that Jan storm that mostly effected them.  How about your area forumers from here in Forum-Land? I bet Seattle only got 2.

We almost never get snow days here.   The only time in the last 100 years the schools have closed was on February 1 1985, when it was -61F in Maybell.

Have they ever had 2 hour delays?  Those are different then closings.  Depending on how it's funded it usually is counted as a full day in terms of funding because it still falls within minimum hours per day needed.    Our schools tend to do more 2 hour delays and don't close unless 2-3 inches is on the ground.   2 hour delays are more common during dicey weather.   

 

Often closures start off as 2 hour delays to err on the side of safety but not full blown panic.

 

Stayton schools from the news often I see 2 hours posted and believe it or not quite a few people around here have 4 wheel drive or AWD cars and pickups and drive pretty courteous so I guess that's why.  

 

The December snowstorm Salem OR had very few accidents mostly fender benders but nothing the police couldn't handle and even those were mostly on the two bridges before they gritted them.   1-5 was accident free despite 3-4 inches of fast snow.

 

Salem handled it pretty well unlike Portland despite being further south.

Since you live near the Gorge I bet they don't close very much due to being *used* to it.  Do you get blasted with east winds like a giant hair dryer aimed at you?

Didn't really affect anything. There were a lot of snow days in the local school district from what I can tell.

No.  School never starts late, regardless of the weather.

Locally, I think there was 2 or 3 snow days. They don't do the late start thing. They are open or they aren't. A school board employee goes out and checks local road conditions around 6am and makes the call. If he feels it is safe for teachers to drive to work then classes are open.

They have gotten rid of teacher work days and conferences and turned them into school days for the rest of the year. Also adding two days to the end of the school year.

Silverton was 6-7 days. Salem about 8 I believe. Stayton/Aumsville got the least amount of snow in Marion County this winter.

Do you think anybody will show up or will there be so many absent kids (and even teachers) that it just turns into a giant tax payers day care centre?   You know watching movies and playing in the gym.

 

In the midwest that happens several times a winter and it can be pretty annoying where nothing gets accomplished and you still drive around in it.

Stayton got shafted a couple times with the "warm tongue" basically a sliver of warm air that noses up along the foothills.

What do you think causes this *warm tongue"?  Weird how it comes across the foothills only.

Klamath County School District actually closed on 2 days this winter, and at least 1 delayed (2 hours) day that resulted this winter. Years can go by and nothing will usually occur within the school districts here from snow, so that means something significant happened. When I finished my senior year here '10-'11 I had a few friends who told me we weather through almost anything to start school so I went by those words. (plus before this winter KCSD never had closures OR delays from snow since I moved to K-Falls!).

 

The day after we were unloading our Uhaul truck right at the end of November 2010, there was 7-8 inches of snow on the ground. Kids were picked up when we were still settling in the next morning. (perhaps some roads were plowed but these were times when they were more prepared).

 

Early on Jan 4th, different story. How is a city to react to a completely sudden 18-20+ inches of snow, nearly overnight, and plows haven't done their rounds until later? (our garbage had been delayed 10-12 days after that snow..) 

 

(also, the school I WENT to was suburban, most of these kinds of locations aren't dealt with until downtown areas are covered)

The snowstorm I had in early January was the biggest since Jan 1993 in such a short period. I think it's interesting that particular winter is frequently mentioned elsewhere in PNW in many places.
