Hes been tweeting photos from Hawaii.  He didn't outright say he was there, but he's there.

Actually in yesterday's video he said he was most likely going to check out the lava flows and see family.

What were the numbers spat out by Jan 1888?

Downtown Portland had 9/-2 with a virtually bare ground on 1/15/1888. That same day Newport, OR had a 20/1 spread, Astoria had a 16/10, Downtown Olympia was 20/-2, and Downtown Spokane was -10/-30.

Oh yeah.

In fact, their coldest high since 2014 is 28. A streak of 3225 days (soon to be 3226 😧) .

Next longest 28+ streak was 2193 days from January 1943 to January 1949. Obvious analog.

Pretty surprising for this extreme era of scorching summers and frigid winters.

I believe we had a little snow around 20 degrees in Feb 2019 and November 2010.

We snuck down to 22 during the 2/21 event, which was really impressive all things considered.

Scorch and summer should be against the law to say. I still have nightmares about that heatwave.  The dry hot summers have sure taken a toll on our hemlocks in Washington and Oregon.

Definitely magical to see it snow west of the cascades in the teens. Just something special about the snow blowing around.

Spokane has a similar streak going with 3226 days since their last high below 13 (2/5/14). Next longest streak was 1839 days from December 1998 to January 2004.

Not shockingly, the two are majorly linked (😲). A pretty direct reflection of the lack of major upper level airmasses recently and more pointedly, a major lack of low level cold air advection into Eastern WA and the Basin, which in turn supplies Portland.

To be fair winter has gotten better too.  We hit rock bottom earlier in the century and have been bouncing back since.  If this one goes like it appears it might it could be the coldest in a long time.

As I have mentioned to Jesse the mountain where I mine gold has huge Douglas Fir trees that are hundreds of years old that are dying off.  It's a very rare biome that features those huge old trees and sage brush in the same area.  The growth rings are tiny and yet some of the trees are three to four feet in diameter.  So sad to see them dying.

Depending on what happens here Friday night and the way the pattern looks coming up, snow on the ground here looks to stay for awhile. Might be a record stretch for snow on the ground in places out here.

I wouldn't rule out all winter.
