Not to mention the Friday before Christmas.

I remember the pandemonium on 12/20/08 when the snow started flying, roads and parking lots were already the equivalent to a frozen rutted cow pasture, then new snow started falling on that compact snow and ice add in the mix of Christmas shopping and it was insane! Took me 2 hours to go 10 miles just to get to the Smokey Point Lowe’s.

Oh yeah.

In fact, their coldest high since 2014 is 28. A streak of 3225 days (soon to be 3226 😧) .

Next longest 28+ streak was 2193 days from January 1943 to January 1949. Obvious analog.

At this point it’d kinda suck not to at least make it to 5,715 and break Nolan Ryan’s record.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

Portland's 8 consecutive highs in the 10s in January 1909 still blows my mind.

This month it will have been 32 years since their last one.

I think if I had to pick my top 3 blasts to experience it would be 1) December 1919 2) January 1909 3) January 1930.

Snow melt today here was obvious. Still 9 inches and hit 40 degrees for the first time since the 26th. Impressive cold spell.

My little snowpack took a major hit today.

1919 would be #1 for me as well due to the combination of the massive blizzard followed by the crazy PV soaked cold. -15 to -20F temps were pretty common in the favored outlying spots.

January 1888 would be #2 due to the fact that it very likely was the absolute single coldest arctic airmass on record in our region. Like December 1968 but shifted a few hundred miles further SW. Not the snowiest but we did have a foot here on the overrunning end of it.

Downtown Portland had 9/-2 with a virtually bare ground on 1/15/1888. That same day Newport, OR had a 20/1 spread, Astoria had a 16/10, Downtown Olympia was 20/-2, and Downtown Spokane was -10/-30.

It’s been almost nineteen years since we’ve had snow falling at that temperature here. Came close in 2008 and 2014.

I believe we had a little snow around 20 degrees in Feb 2019 and November 2010.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Scorch and summer should be against the law to say. I still have nightmares about that heatwave.  The dry hot summers have sure taken a toll on our hemlocks in Washington and Oregon.

Spokane has a similar streak going with 3226 days since their last high below 13 (2/5/14). Next longest streak was 1839 days from December 1998 to January 2004.

Not shockingly, the two are majorly linked (😲). A pretty direct reflection of the lack of major upper level airmasses recently and more pointedly, a major lack of low level cold air advection into Eastern WA and the Basin, which in turn supplies Portland.

To be fair winter has gotten better too.  We hit rock bottom earlier in the century and have been bouncing back since.  If this one goes like it appears it might it could be the coldest in a long time.
