Was it's max speed confirmed to be a Cat 4 or 5? Last I saw was 155mph which is almost a CAT 5 so at some point it probably reached the 157 criteria but I'm not sure. Either way I hope Florida can recover quickly from this.

From what I am reading online, it seems you are right that it only ever reached Category 4.  I was listening to the Weather Channel the hours leading up to impact and they were continuously saying the Ian had hit category 5 wind speeds off the coast.  But I have no evidence beyond me saying they said that.  So they must have taken back that claim?  I am sure in a few days we will get more info. :) I do know there were wind gusts of 165mph on Tuesday at 8:00PM Eastern.  That has been logged.

I believe they were using the velocity data on radar which was showing some intense winds in the eye wall.

This sucker is strengthening rapidly.   Goodbye a lot of vacation spots south of Tampa.  This will take years for the area to recover if it scoots up the coast slowly as a cat 3/4.

Ugh, this was actually an understatement at the time.  What devastation.

The top gust recorded by an NWS station was 155 miles per hour, and that burst hit the Punta Gorda Airport.

This was as of Friday, but they said that some instruments they were still trying to get to may have higher data that was captured/recorded but couldn't be transmitted. Anyone have any updates since then? d

On a silver lining note, it looks like Venice fared better than expected due to Ian passing south and avoiding the dreaded storm surge. And the high winds were "off-shore" too instead of having the wide open waters of the Gulf to work with.

Wow shocking, weather isn't climate.  Woah.  Great argument.  Yet Climate Change is still a FACT.  And it's caused by humans.

I don’t deny the climate changes…it absolutely does change…the BIG difference is we differ in opinion of the reasoning behind how/why it changes.  IMO, It ain’t solely caused by humans.

It’s “political” bc rather than disagreeing on the science for example, people claim it’s some deep state financial scam/hoax/China blah blah blah. And of course it’s understood that more republicans take big donations from big oil, so why would they agree with human caused climate change?

And Republicans are also known as less science based/more religion “God controls everything” too. Just look at COVID.

My post went way over your head.  I simply stated the NOAA director carried himself in a professional manner and didn’t agree on live TV with CNN’s Don Lemon’s push for climate change.  It was smart to stay neutral.  End of story.

Florida can’t catch a break.
The hurricane center predicted a particularly wobbly forward movement for Nicole as it approaches Florida before crossing into the northwest Gulf of Mexico. At 7 p.m. Monday, it had top winds of 45 mph (75 kph) and was centered about 425 miles (685 kilometers) east-northeast of the northwestern Bahamas, the advisory said. The storm was moving to the northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).
