PNW December 2022 - Part II

Currently 38.5 and raining. Looks like the east wind has been winning the battle mostly here so far. Haven’t lost much snow cover. I still have more than @MossMan and he got 8 inches while I only had a 3 inch depth. Just goes to show how quickly snow can melt with a warm south wind.

It cannot get much colder than thr ocean temperature. Can it?

Not quite how it works. The ocean will moderate the lower levels of an onshore airmass, but how much moderation takes place depends on the strength of the cold airmass, and how much over water trajectory it has. Once wavelengths change in February/March you will see pacific storm systems with deep cold pools behind them, come thousands of miles across the NE Pacific and still drop snow levels to 500-1000'.

Imagine if Randy lived in your area, he would have rated this event a -1 on a 1/10 scale.

Honestly I would rate this "event" at about a 7.5 for SLE and PDX. Two sub-freezing highs, and a significant winter storm. Lows in the teens and snow would have gotten the rating up to 9.

Even with the long dry period this summer and fall, SEA looks to end the year just barely wetter than the yearly average. They will also likely end December wetter than average. They are still short on the water year but will be close to being above average after next week. Was surprised with how dry it has been in general in the northwest this year. NW Washington has been spared for the most part when it comes to lack of precip.

Still a disaster for some areas that are hanging onto the cold air. Snoqualmie Pass now an extended closure in both directions with no estimate of re-opening.

I guess that 19˚F reading was a rounding error and PDX didn’t make it into the teens, how sad!

I narrowly missed the single digits here.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Just a minor annoyance for the time being. The fireplace is working so it’s not too bad here.

I think we’re a fraction of a degree above freezing currently. Certainly better than a fraction of a degree below!

Our power was out from about 10am on Christmas eve until the 27th last year. It came back on for a few hours here and there during that time. The snow event we had last year on this date was 6" of absolute concrete.

NWS Spokane at least has a sense of humor

Today through Christmas Day:  Mother nature is giving the Spokane
Weather Service the perfect gift for Christmas this year...an
extremely complex and intricate puzzle to solve within the
atmosphere. As meteorologists, we look forward to these challenges
thrown at us and we continue to sort through the pieces of data
in an effort to provide you the best forecast we can. With that
being said, the next 48 hours will present a messy and hour by
hour changing forecast as our resident Arctic air mass is slowly
beaten down by a series of subtropical moisture plumes. Whether
you are traveling or sitting cozy by the fire, residents of the
Inland Northwest will be gifted a mix of snow, freezing rain,
maybe some sleet, and eventually switch to rain. Precipitation
will come in two main weather systems. The first tracks through
today (SAT) with a second, albeit lighter precipitation event on
Christmas Day.

I was just thinking I’m glad I don’t have a basement.  Our downspouts are frozen and the water has been pouring off the roof this morning.  Haven’t really lost much snow over though.  Looks like about 8-10” looking at my neighbors roof

Too bad we couldn't have had a clean ending to this event.  Such a freeking mess this time.

That's one reason 1928-29 is very high on my list of favorite winters I would like to see repeat.  Three weeks of very cold and clear weather after 10 days of solid cold and multiple snow events.

Looks like the ECMWF went warmer than the 0z while the GFS was chillier for the second half of next week.  Still some issues to be resolved as far as the track of the low pressure systems next week.
