PNW December 2022 - Part II

Current outage for reference when/if it gets windy later today. The 52 is near my house, must have been why my power blinked off for a second earlier.
Also my current snow pile situation! I need to clean my gutters again.

I am starting to get February 2019 type vibes about the period beginning in late January. It seems like models are in lock step that is our next chance, and the potential appears to be off the charts. The next few weeks might be a little boring around here, but we should continue to see some rain and stack up the mountain snow. The rain being shown for California during this upcoming period would be a blessing from the GODS.

I'd prefer a more February 2014/1993 event.

Not saying it will play out like February 2019 necessarily. More that I think we are going to be heading into a period of long duration full latitude west coast troughing.

First half of January is definitely shot. Anything besides mild rain should be considered a nice bonus.

They are not accounting for the the surge to come in far enough through the strait like what usually always happens. I think today will be quite the wildcard. Nobody seems to have a good handle on what kind of wind speeds we will be looking at. Fun!!

They did this in early November. We’ll get our wind, even if Jim is out there trying to stop it.

February! The new king of snow and cold!
My memorable ones are 1989 (1988 was okay as well if I am remembering correctly) 2001, 2007, 2011, 2014 (for cold not snow) 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 (brief but nice) 2021, 2022…Possibly 2023?
I might be missing a few as well.

What was 1995 like there? I know there was a pretty big snowstorm in PDX but I'm not sure about the Puget Sound

Just checked Snoqualmie Falls... no snow there in February 1995.   Looks like 3 cold days in an otherwise fairly warm month otherwise.   And it was wetter than normal.    It was nothing like February 2019.

7 days from now is plenty of time for the ensemble signal to change for 3 weeks from now.

Our focus is on the last week of January.  We already canceled the first 3 weeks back on December 18th.

1990 also had a nice event for much of western WA. 1994 had a smaller event in spots.

Well, the earlier some sort of change in the signal begins, the better. Could always get pushed back once it does.

Yeah it wasn't anything like 2019 but Downtown Portland had 10" of snow and some places had around a foot.

The weather advisory mentioned minor coastal flooding, but it is definitely more than minor.  My in-law's beach house in University Place has flooding higher than they have ever seen! Their basement room is completely flooded and they had to take the chickens in the house because of the pond in the back yard.  Combination of King tides and extreme low pressure, plus SW winds pushing the waves even higher.

We just had a pretty decent December cold snap (low sun angles and all). Missing a January one is no biggie. Plus it is now traditional for January to be something of a dud month (in the lowlands at least, mountains look like they will start scoring good).
