PNW December 2022 - Part II

this is a very interesting satellite loop. looks like main low crossing CA border to the north and moisture caught under upper level N winds and surface W/SW's winds? can one of you weather brainiacs explain what's going on here? lol

westport still howling, btw

People who are bashing this event for the Puget Sound region need to take note of the timing shown on the models.  The peak time hasn't happened yet.  Give the track of the low I'm thinking there will be some gusts to 50 in places.  The biggest problem with this one is it has too much time to fill before it moved into the right position to really hit the Puget Sound super hard.

Yeah, but the track hasn't been ideal for several days now.

Doing fine here. Power never even flickered. 46F and we have calmed down with some showers for now.

I love our forests and don't like to see weather that destroys them.

I like sun and warmth (but not 100+) in summer as long as we also get rain.

I like rain (in moderation) in fall, winter, and spring when it doesn't involve flooding and landslides and we get occasional sunbreaks. Even in summer, I like a good rainfall at night maybe once a week. Or a day or two of drizzle that clears to sunbreaks.

I like a little bit of a windstorm. Enough to feel a little wild but not enough to bring down trees and power lines.

I like thunderstorms that come with rain so lightning doesn't start forest fires.

I like snow, even lots of it, so long as it isn't bringing down big branches and trees.

I like cold although probably not below zero. (Wouldn't know for sure as I haven't experienced it.)

I do not like ice unless it is a very small amount.

I like variety in my weather but not extremes. Whatever makes our forests green and healthy and is also somewhat seasonal is what I will always root for. Sorry!

Can’t post pics right now, but when you get to either the I-5 or I-205 bridges all you see is fire and brimstone.

Some decent winds in the South Sound now.  Maybe a bit weaker than I expected though.

On another note they used the 65 in the official records for Hoquiam yesterday.  Somebody needs to look at that.

Looking forward to how this plays out with my local geography. Winds out of the south are often shadowed by the Seattle Hill plateau. That blast being modeled out of the Strait would give us some transformer firework fun, but if it’s SWesterly, no dice.

This is my whole take on it. Just because you like extreme weather, doesn't mean you want people to be harmed.

We all live once. Might as well enjoy the craziness of the natural world.

This is basically what I think about extreme weather. I will 100% be excited for the windstorm/snowstorm of the century or a massive thunderstorm outbreak but that doesn't mean I want any harm to be caused. Might as well enjoy extreme weather when it happens.

Not trying to control them. I just don't root for the extremes even when I am in awe of them. Maybe cold and snow for this area would be the exception. Also probably from having lived through a hurricane as a kid. In awe of the weather, but not necessarily something I would hope would happen. Another Columbus Day Storm? No thanks. Another Jan 1950? Maybe. The thaw from part one sounded a little too destructive to m, but if I could get the 2nd part without that thaw, sign me up.

Those winds that blast down the Strait are pretty incredible.

So true.  I totally get it that some people like windstorms.  I used to like them a lot more myself.

In the end though cold and snow is what does it for me.  Everyone has their own type of weather that they like.

This is a big reason I'm such a fan of 1928-29, 1936-37, and some others.  Tons of cold, plenty of snow, but none of the nastiness.

Sounds like at least 31 dead from the Buffalo winter storm. That is rough. Would I love to see that caliber storm here…Yes. Because I love weather extremes. I would do everything possible beforehand to warn everyone I know that it would be a life and death situation and to PREPARE!! Stay home and have a way to stay warm if the power goes out. Have food and water and prepare to be on your own for at least a week.

Crazy windy day here. I grew up with hurricanes and this felt close to a good tropical storm. Solid 12 hours of nonstop wind with some BiG gusts

a lot of power outages but doesn’t look too bad in my immediate area,, I think feb 2021 took care of alot of our potential debris.

By the way, November + December so far is the 5th coldest on record at PDX, and the coldest since 1985. Helps that we completely avoided the torch excepting today because of the Gorge.

We probably will fall behind 2013 in the next few days though and maybe a few more places

The next few hours will get fairly impressive for the South and Central Sound.

It's not gonna be nearly as much as what people were leading on to here and on the news.  We'll see some 30-40mph gusts in the south sound (Tacoma area) and not much else.  Chehalis Gap influenced areas will see stronger of course.  NWS was right to wait on putting those advisories and strong wind warnings out because this system was so interlaced with various complexities.

Here is our wind gust map at the moment.  Strongest winds are on the coast and the eastern portions of our respective states.  Puget Sound will not amount to much in comparison even to what Portland got. 841646628_ScreenShot2022-12-27at5_17_06PM.thumb.png.e1eed00ce051a1d0e642df4b739d0cc0.png

I've been hearing the death toll is over 50 in the Northeast now. :(  This statistic is pretty crazy too. --> In the past three days, they've had just under 60 inches of snow in Buffalo.  They are getting more snow as we type.

Don't really know where you're basing this prediction. Tacoma narrows bridge just gusted to 44 and flow is still ramping up. It's not the huge storm that was possible yesterday but only a slight downgrade. Still on track for 50mph gusts in Seattle

Snow level down to about 3000' in the Oregon Cascades. Horse Creek about 10 miles east as the buzzard flies, is down to 32.

Just tracking the radar and comparing what model predictions from yesterday and earlier today to what is actually happening. The latest runs are all coming it much weaker as well.  It is far less than any of them were predicting at this time related to the Puget Sound.  Again, I am not talking about the ocean coastal areas. :)

Bust is possible. Let's wait and see, strait winds are ramping up and S winds are still getting stronger, I'm still counting on some good winds
