PNW December 2022 - Part II

The peak of the wind is expected to be between 7pm-12am tonight.  This is roughly the extend of the worst of it according to ECM and GFS is pretty much on par.

Have your devices charged and emergency kits ready just in case!  It's going to be wet out there too.  767411314_ScreenShot2022-12-27at5_36_17PM.thumb.png.68bd2224ac10cc3ef92693acd37c9a8a.png

I'm noticing a huge lack of posters from OR.  I hope it didn't get TOO bad down there.

I posted early in the morning. Most of the rain/wind for us down here was last night and at least my side of town we didn't lose power.

Looking at the records, really wet days on this date in 1928 and 1942. ANALOGS?!

A 1928-29 redux would really put a smile on my face. 😀

Not trying to control them. I just don't root for the extremes even when I am in awe of them. Maybe cold and snow for this area would be the exception. Also probably from having lived through a hurricane as a kid. In awe of the weather, but not necessarily something I would hope would happen. Another Columbus Day Storm? No thanks. Another Jan 1950? Maybe. The thaw from part one sounded a little too destructive to m, but if I could get the 2nd part without that thaw, sign me up.

I meant you can't control it as in, destructive events are going to happen, from the point of a weather geek, you may as well enjoy them.

Gusts into the mid 30s in Pierce County away from the water now.  The ECMWF says the winds should peak in this area in  a little over an hour.

That late January event looks great. A 20/16 day at downtown PDX with 13.2" of snow that month.  And then snow stayed on the ground for more than half of February!

I would personally take 1929-1930 though. 19 consecutive days below freezing in Portland in January with 2 big snowstorms and snow in the ground for all of it! Hillsboro had 13.5" of snow in one day, 24.2" of snow total and a low temp of -14!

One thing about these storms is they can have embedded squall lines.  Sometimes those get pretty wild, but I'm not seeing anything yet.

Back to back amazing winters there.  1928-29 was much better up here than 1929-30 was.

Yeah I heard the snow in January 1930 was focused further south. It's a tough call, January 1930 is pretty much the coldest month on record down here... On the other hand the rest of that winter was pretty torchy. 1929-30 did seem to have a N/S gradient with a lot of events, but was still pretty great down this way. Even had a 7.5" snow event in late December at SLE, that I'm guessing was an anafront.

I just can't get excited about wind, no matter how hard I try.  It does absolutely no good for anyone in any way, shape, or form.

I will be back posting when another snowstorm is imminent.  Wind blows, literally.

Yay, something is broken!!  Go wind!!!!!  Awesome!!!!

On a positive note, temp is dropping here and we should get some snow showers.  Already snowing in S. Bend and points south.

Interesting storm-- not incredibly powerful but rather messy as far as the amount of branches and trees I see down, and power outages in the metro. Might be due to the 1-2 punch of extremely waterlogged soil, last week's ice, followed by unusually strong westerly winds.

Welp.... Olympia has had a 15mph gust so far...

Fox Island across from University Place near Tacoma saw a 29mph gust with sustained winds currently at 4mph.

Des Moines' North Hill saw a 24mph gust just moments ago.

Seattle's Queen Anne saw a 12mph gust.   Sustained at 8mph.

Edmonds strongest gust still is at 29mph from earlier in the afternoon.  Sustained winds around 11mph.

My location got seriously blasted at 4 am - strongest winds in several years for sure - but the HWW period of 10 am-4pm was only mildly breezy.  Almost calm now.

Was of course hoping that I might see this post from Juiceless Joshua in Lake Oswego, but I figured I owed it to him to mention that after the latest deluge, Portland has now fully secured a wetter than average year in 2022. PDX was at 39.04" of rain and counting as of 5pm. Flirting with the 40s pretty soon!

Judging by radar the storm may finally be arriving. The westerlies are coming! The westerlies are coming! Raining pretty hard out there after a mostly dry day with 0.54" in the bucket so far.

Wind speeds are under-performing all over the Puget Sound at the moment.  The peak/bulk of the storm for the puget Sound is supposed to begin around 7pm and end in the early morning hours.  Some gusts, but the sustained winds are pretty weak at the moment.  Watching the Strait, as that might turn into a punching fist for some.

I definitely wasn't expecting the past three days to be as wet as it has but it really does remind me of our real deluges-- December 2015, November 1996, etc.

Today was one of the better rain/wind combos I can remember in quite awhile. Unusually steady rainfall for a 40+mph south wind event, which are typically accompanied by warm sector drying during the peak winds. Made it feel nice and coastal compared to most of our storms.

Here's a good site to look for surface observations, run by NOAA NWS Weather & Hazards (noaa.gov)

I'd suggest this site-- some good real-time observations with a variety of stations representative of a fair amount of local microclimates.
