PNW December 2022 - Part II

It seems like all of our recent Ninas have featured these long periods of mid-winter dormancy. Seems like a pretty established pattern by this point.

2010-2011: Completely dead period mid-January through Mid-February. Came back with a vengeance in late-February through spring.

2011-12: Very inversiony December. Got more active mid-January, really came on strong in March into early April.

2016-17: Weak Nina - No long mid-winter dead period

2017-18: Torchy January/early February. Turned cold late February.

2020-21: Torchy December first 2/3rds of January.

2021-22: Dormant mid-January until late-February.

2022-23: Pattern turns El Nino-ish for January.

Looks like Lake Tahoe is about to get a tremendous amount of rain. System may end with snow, and it appears snow levels are supposed to be quite a bit lower next week.

Not having internet sucks. Elon Musk must not like power surges. Time to put the modem on a backup power supply/surge protector even though they do not recommend using any non Starlink equipment…But with already two failures in 3 months I need to do something. Hopefully he will be shipping me a new modem in the next few days. Not easy these days to not have internet/cell service except for one spot in the house where I can make a call out or check email…Sometimes. It’s in the closet, we call it the phone booth. Anyway had to run into work just to get service even though I am on vacation and thought I would come by the forum to say hi and hoping we get a massive regional windstorm and snowstorm next month! If not regional then northern Snohomish County would do just fine.

Hear me out.  This year felt like our climate was more continental.  Hot summer, cold, frigid winter, snow, ice storm, strong wind storms.

It feels like the past two years have been more continental than our actually climactic type.  hah.

Let’s hope it goes back to that continental feel

I was just looking at the snow depth records at Hoodoo near Santiam Pass over the past 20 years. The deepest snow depth recorded there was April 8, 2008 at 157". 2001-02 was also a really big snow pack year up there, and the 3rd deepest snow depth was recorded in March, 2012.

Conversely the worst year by far was 2014-15, the max depth was only 23", and no other week recorded a depth greater than 13", I'm not sure if the resort was even able to operate that winter, if so it would have had to have been very very limited.

Unfortunately, with La Niña ending (a quadruple-dip La Niña would be unprecedented), we are probably now due for a run of dud winters, particularly if we head into an El Niño.

Interestingly, if you look at the Hoodoo stats, the past 3 La Nina winters have performed fairly poorly compared to past Ninas. With only 20-21 briefly touching the 100" depth mark. Whereas past Ninas, 16-17', 11-12, 10-11, 08-09, 07-08, all performed very well.

Ninos are not typically great up there either, but 19-20, 18-19, and 15-16' peaked higher than 21-22 or 17-18 did.

Not sure the ENSO status of 05-06, but that year was one of their better years for deep and sustained snow depth.

Boston was probably snowier that winter.

Meanwhile Boston has only had 1.0" thus far. And NYC is sitting on a nice little goose egg. With nothing in sight.

Bostons least snowiest winter was 1936-37 with only 9.2”. Hoping that analog can work out for the second half of January into February! I can’t imagine the weenieism over there if they manage to get their least snowiest on record. Even if they still managed ONE decent 3-6” event and only ended with that for the winter they would still be going full weenie. I’m pretty sure everyone over here would be pretty satisfied with an event like that. 🤣

They were pretty spoiled from about 2002 to 2015 in the Northeast. Lots of big and historic storms and snow totals for that region. Seems like they may finally be in the midst of a much milder phase now, or maybe it's just climate change finally catching up to their winters as it did ours a little earlier.

Kinda parallels the Patriots dynasty's rise and fall.....

I've had about 10 6" events this winter so far.  6" overnight.

Looks like Lake Tahoe is about to get a tremendous amount of rain. System may end with snow, and it appears snow levels are supposed to be quite a bit lower next week.

It has been raining hard all day and streets are starting to flood. I have water in my garage already. Concerning part is the start of the heavy stuff is still 12 hours away.

Another warm day at SEA... looks like 52 so far.

The cold monthly average has taken quite a hit over the last week... looks like it will end up around -3.7 which is still impressively cold.  But this month will end up warmer than last December.

Probably around 120 hours this year. Nearly 100 hours just last month alone.

Crazy.  Is there a weak point somewhere where it fails often?  Is the utility company not cutting trees around the lines? You're not THAT far out.

5 days of no power can get pricey for a generator.

Currently 50.3. I’ve recorded highs of 45+ every day since Christmas Eve. Before that I hadn’t recorded a high over 44 for the entire month. Quite the flip of a switch.
