January 2023 Observations and Discussions

Yesterday felt chilly in our mild winter but it was still over 4 degrees above normal. We should stay above normal through Monday with several days to follow this week actually staying below normal regarding temperatures. We will have multiple precipitation chances this week...but for now nothing too heavy. The 1st chance Sunday evening will be rain any chances both Tuesday through Thursday would be for snow. For snow lovers across the area the trend on the models is to keep most of the precipitation to the south and southeast of Chester County. That said - the NWS does have small chances of some snow both Tuesday night into Wednesday and on Thursday. By this Friday temps will likely stay below freezing for daytime highs.
The record high for today is 67 degrees set way back in 1914. The record low is 10 below zero from 1925. The record precip and snow was from the 2 day blizzard that began today in 1922 with 18" falling on the 28th and an additional 8" on the 29th equaling the 8th largest snowstorm in our history at 26" of snow. As you can see below on the observation notes from the observer Mr. W.T. Gordon the snow began overnight on the 28th and ended by 10:30am on the 29th. Of note Mr. Gordon was the Superintendent of the Coatesville School District. I found his name and some information from the year 1910 for the district. There were 1,762 students in the district and Mr. Gordon was paid an annual salary of $1,750. That is worth $259,394.26 in compensation today.

A pretty cloudy stretch of weather till about Wednesday but with mild temperatures continuing until a chill down to normal by Tuesday and then below normal for the rest of the week. It may very briefly turn very cold on Friday and especially Saturday morning could see temps in the single digits. We have a couple slight chances at precipitation both this afternoon in the form of rain showers and a slight chance of snow showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday AM....but as usual this season no accumulation!
The record high for today is 69 degrees from 1947. Our record low is 7 below zero from 1928. Daily precipitation mark is the 1.46" from 1990 and the daily snow record is the 13" of snow that fell today in 1966 - that storm ended the following day with 14" of snow making it the 9th largest snowstorm in January weather history for our county. Oh and Go Birds!!

You know something, the pattern setting up from Week 2 and into Week 4 is going to set up a friggin' battle zone smack dab through the Heartland of this Nation.  My goodness, there is quite a fight among the global models as they try to figure out the pattern in the LR.   There is going to be an Arctic connection along with a SER which should create a frontal boundary somewhere from the TX Panhandle up through the GL's region.

The trends in the CFSv2 are "Seeing" the cold bleed south and the warmth build over the SE...

Wet, wet, wet....someone is going to get buried on here...some will be very upset as the snows disappear.  The "haves and have nots"....nevertheless, it's going to get busy starting around the 7th/8th of next week.

My impression of the next three weeks is it’s going to be a royal rumble.

Taking a further look at the record books, recent Januaries appear to have had as rough as a time here as they did for us in the PNW. No other year in the 2000s era cracked the top 10 snowiest Januaries. Next closest year is 1979 at the #7 spot. You have to go all the way down to #17 to find another year in the 2000s (2011). The closest year in the top five is 1937 (1929, 2023, 1897, 1937, 1910).

It's been a long standing joke in the PNW that January never delivers but we can always count on February. I guess the same holds true for the Northern Plains. So although we didn't get #1 spot, at least we got that huge a** monkey off our back.

Yeah we don’t live near a 50+ degree ocean anymore! Also never thought I would see rain in January in a state that is literally shaped like a Mitt.

What’s happening to the big dog storm that’s suppose to hit in a couple days? I thought per the LRC we was going to have a huge storm in Midwest

Looks to be across the deep south, no phasing and a ice storm for Oklahoma and Texas.  I'm beyond disappointed.

Today NYC ties the longest wait for winters first snowfall. Last time this happened was back in 1972-73, when 1.8" finally coated Central Park. February is their snowiest month there, so we will see what happens. March is also a stormy month in NYC when some of their biggest snowstorms have occurred.

I.e., I remember February, 2006, the city received its all time biggest snowstorm. I was having cappuccino in downtown (village area w/ friends)..and I remember I couldn't even find a taxi to go back to my apartment up by upper west side which is literally a 10-maybe 15 minute ride.

26.9 inches
February 12, 2006
The North American Blizzard of 2006 hit East Coast cities from Baltimore to Boston with enough winter weather to cancel school for days, but few places got more than the Big Apple. A full 26.9 inches dumped on NYC, the highest snowfall ever counted by government records.

Btw: great tip to know: if you are brave enough to drive in Manhattan, try to make all green lights, because if you do, you will be at your destination fast. If one light catches you, then, you're doomed. 😉

Currently down state at our home in northern St Clair county. We have about 6” of snow on the ground, maybe a little more but the exact depth doesn’t matter to much to me like most other weather geeks it seems. Snowed pretty hard last night and the fresh snow really makes it look like the dead of winter like it is currently. Was just out in Port Huron and there’s no ice that I saw anywhere on the lake or the St Clair river which is pretty unusual for almost February. Sounds like this coming week will cool off and stay pretty dry other then a little lake effect snow showers/flurry’s once in a while. Snow depths in Michigan vary depending on where you’re at but the least amount is in our normal “ Banana belt” areas being extreme south east MI around the Detroit area and south which is pretty common. The deepest being in the higher elevations of the western UP where there is  30-36 inches. I talked to family in Paradise up near White Fish Point today and they are getting close to 2 feet on the ground there. January was definitely a warm one but some areas of the UP still found a way to get a “decent “ snow cover going into February.

Last night I am under a WWA and we barely got a dusting. Tonight there is a slight chance of snow and it’s coming down as hard as it has all winter and we already have more than yesterday. This winter summed up in 24 hours.

This was the second wave some of the models latched onto and I was surprised to see how the radar blossomed over N IL as a woke up to a coating of snow.  I haven't measured but it looks like a nice fresh layer of snow fell last night.  This wasn't supposed to track this far north but I'll take it.

One last above normal day today before we trend closer to normal and then well below normal with a brief arctic blast on Friday and Saturday. There is a small chance of some light rain changing to snow tonight and a better chance of some snow on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
The record high for today is 69 degrees from 1947. Our record low is 7 below zero from 1928. Record precipitation is 1.47" from 1939. Daily snow record is the 5.1" that fell in 2000.

Yesterday’s official high of 26 at Grand Rapids was the coldest high so far this January and the coldest high since December 27th The official low for yesterday was 23. There was 0.13” of total precipitation and a official snow fall amount of 1.9” and the official snow depth was 8” I was on the far southwest side of town yesterday and you can tell there is less snow on the ground there then here in my area. Bitter cold tanite as readings here in Macomb could flirt w/ zero (actual temp that is) and later in the week , even colder air arrives. Temps by then (Firiday nite) could drop in the -10's. BRRRRRRRR!!!!

Also, I have my eyes on the storm for the 8-10Th as it looks to be very interesting.

This month ranks as the least sunniest JAN on record with only 18% of possible sunshine!  Just a cloudy, dreary and mild month.  You know it was going to be a warm month when PHX logged 23 days Below average as the trough in the west was the dominant feature.  The sunshine yesterday reflecting against the high albedo snow pack really had an amazing and uplifting effect on the psyche.  I miss the sun!

Yesterday, ORD dipped to a low of -1F, that was the coldest temp since Christmas Eve (-1F).  There was 3" of snow reported OTG.  Interestingly, since Jan 19th, ORD reported 10 days with either a Trace of Snow or measurable Snow.  While it did feel somewhat like "winter" in this abnormally mild month, ORD did manage to pick up 9.9" of Snow, but that stat is still BN in the snow dept for the month of JAN (-1.4").  It appears we got our "10 days of Winter"...joking aside, I'm thankful for the snow we got and the cold temps this week that'll keep it looking like winter for a few more days.

It was a very mild January across Lower Michigan the mean of 31.5 at Grand Rapids was the 5th warmest January. At Lansing their mean of 32.2 is the 4th warmest. At Muskegon the mean of 34.1 is the 3rd warmest, at Holland the mean there of 33.2 is the 5th warmest. To the east at Detroit the January mean there of 33.5 is the 7th warmest. At Flint the January mean of 31.5 is the 6th warmest and at Saginaw the mean there of 30.9 is the 4th warmest. So all across southern lower Michigan January 2023 was one of the warmest of record in lower Michigan.

Well if you missed it we did get a little snow between about 330am and 5am this morning. We received a whopping 0.2" in East Nantmeal. This is our 6th winter "event" of the season and brings our seasonal total of snow to 2.4". We finished January as the 2nd warmest first month of the year in Chester County history with an average temperature of 39.5 - behind only the 42.2 average temperature recorded in January 1932.
It looks dry for at least the next week with colder than normal temperatures through Saturday before warming to above normal once again by Sunday. Both Friday and Saturday will stay well below freezing with lows on Saturday AM in the single digits.
The record high for today is 68 degrees from 1989. Our record low is 5 below zero from 1935. Daily melted precipitation record is 2.43" from 1915. Our daily snow record was set just 2 years ago when we were in the middle of a multi-day snowstorm that resulted in the last time we recorded a 12"+ snowstorm here in Chester County PA. Between January 31 through February 3rd we recorded 16.6" of snow with a daily record of 9.3" falling on February 1st following the 4.3" on the 31st.
