I just don't see this forum being large enough to support both regional threads and an overall thread. It would have to be either one or the other, pretty much. And tbh I really appreciate having one consolidated thread. It's fun to trade observations back and forth with people living in other regions. Yeah it sucks when someone living somewhere else gets snow and you don't, but sometimes that's the only consolation we have anyway. Like...it's nice that conditions in a given month/winter can vary so much across geographical space across the western lowlands, but how it all averages out to be roughly the same-ish. That's what I gain from having one big thread, is that interplay of diversity and commonality. Plus, I appreciate hearing from people in other parts of the West in the same thread, even Phil's random reports of derechos and -10F blizzards--it adds some variety.

I get it. And I agree for the most part. Just been frustrating being constantly trolled and my posts misrepresented. One member in particular has been constantly trolling and harassing me for nearly two years over what turned out to be an accurate analysis of a snow event they were experiencing.

That does suck. That's something that forum moderation should be able to address, at least ideally, and if not then that speaks more to a problem with moderation than with the nature of the forum's threads in my opinion.

Moderation here? That’s a joke right? Our moderators do nothing aside from shuffling some posts a couple times a year.

Moderators can move posts and hide posts. By definition you can't see the posts that are hidden, but believe me there are plenty.

 

Personally I only hide the posts that are clear violations of iFred's rules. There are plenty of passive aggressive trolling posts that I let slide, but I'm not opposed to changing that.

 

And if I'm being honest, there can be long winded arguments and sad attempts at humor that I find too hard to read in their entirety. Also between work and family, I may only check in once a day.

 

Probably more moderators would help. You're welcome to email iFred if you'd like to enlist. Be forewarned, it doesn't pay anything.

Yea it’s understandable with more important commitments for you guys. A volunteer moderator job isn’t exactly going to be high priority. I just find the consistent mundane arguments between the same people annoying. Guess I should just do what I normally do and keep scrolling.

Well I still plan on participating in the British Columbia/ Puget Sound thread. But being accused of regional bias when making factual comments gets old after awhile. I love talking PNW weather, meaning Puget Sound, N Interior, Spokane, Bend, K-Falls, NE Oregon, etc... But the problem is 75% of the posters don't want to discuss anything outside of BC/Puget Sound, won't acknowledge it, and get upset when people do.

That's how it is on Mark's weather blog so I left in a huff and slammed the door. They don't want to acknowledge anything outside of Portland so the best posters stay away unless a storm or winter weather event happens.

If the thread gets traction, then sure, I'll pin it and it can be a "thing". I would recommend against it, as fragmentation doesn't really work, given that a system impacting the lower mainland of BC also affects Portland. In the next iteration of the forum, we'll probably do away with small regional boards and work with tag'd obs threads.

 

If the motive is because of a few people on the forum, then block them. You can even block admins!

 

I actually did not know we had the option to block people.

Don’t you live in Silverton? That’s the northern half of Oregon. Basically ground zero for weather action last winter and many winters, and the heart of the PNW, geographically. Eugene, (to your south) hit negatives just four years ago. You talk like you are living in Redding or something.

Yea. I was thinking the same thing. The January thread last Winter was dominated by Oregon posts. Very little from many of the Puget sound people

Actually I don't live in Silverton. I live near Stayton and we were just out of touch of the snow but drove into Silverton for a doctor appointment and I can confirm that there was indeed quite a bit of snow that Andrews said happened. I can't remember the exact totals but I believe it was in excess of 4 inches.   As soon as you drive down the hill into Stayton nothing.     As soon as you left this area either direction that month you'd hit winter wonderland and went up into the foothills for fun just to see it.  All Stayton got was flurries.

 

Our fun came back in December where we had exactly 3.5 inches of it that stayed for several days on the ground.  That was funner then January of this year.  It was amazing how BRIGHT everything was at night in that snow. The tiniest bit of lights amplified.

 

We also went to Keizer Station to shop whenever it was sunny after that event and they had left over snow NOT melting despite full sunshine all day. The snow was rock hard you'd break your shovel if you attempted to remove it.

 

Often times near Stayton it rains around but not here unless it's a straight SW flow event then it's pretty uniformed everywhere.

Actually it was dominated by pudget sound people complaining at the lack of snow and I felt for them.  Portland got buried but not so much past Silverton/south.  Where we live we are more in line with Eugene weather. My temps often match within a degree of Eugene.

Stayton did have less snow last winter than pretty much anyone else in the area. They missed out on a lot of the January events it seemed. 

 

Interestingly in December 2008 Silverton got much more snow than Stayton too.
