On This Day In History...Major Weather Events in the PNW or West

That was weird since we had nothing down here at all. Didn't have any winter really other than some onshore flow snow in late Feb. 10-11 and 11-12 were complete busts here.

It snowed a little in Silverton with that...I need to go through my facebook I think I have some pics...

On this day in 1977, a major overrunning snowstorm hit the area from Salem to Seattle. Around the Portland metro area, a monthly 24 hour record 6-8" fell in the morning hours, the first  >1" snowfall at the PDX station in nearly five (!) years.

Looks like about 7" at Silver Falls.

6.1" at Salem. Pretty rare to have an overrunning snow event so early. Salem had lows of 19 and 15 on the 19th/20th. The snow event was followed by pretty extreme torching the rest of the month.

Wasn't it today 7yrs ago that we had the snow and flash freeze?

Traffic inches along Mercer Street headed for I-5 on Nov. 22, 2010. Some drivers just gave up. (Dean Rutz / The Seattle Times)

http://seattletimes.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/today/files/2014/11/11222010-620x413.jpg

I spent that entire storm stuck in that gridlock on my way home from WWU. Lots of people abandoned their cars all around us and the roads were all complete sheets of ice behind the flash freeze. It was amazing.

Took me almost 4 hours just to go the 4 miles from the UW exit to the ferry downtown.

Then I finally got to Bainbridge and it took me over an hour to drive 3 miles home because there were so many trees down across the roads from the 60mph North winds that accompanied the Arctic front.

Needless to say, I have mixed feelings about that storm. By the time I got home, the snow had stopped so I really couldn't enjoy it while it fell. But it was so awe-inspiring that I will definitely never forget it.

That is crazy! Last December 14th when we had a pretty decent snowstorm down in the Willamette Valley I barely made it to PDX for my flight out before the roads were gripped with 7 hour gridlock.

My mother had trouble getting back home that evening too. I forgot which streets but during the 12/29/2009 snow in Hillsboro, traffic was extremely backed up. She was late for dinner an additional 2 hours I think, she was just getting off of work at the time. That was the day before my birthday so that one stuck out in my memory.

A pineapple express* turned to snow in the southern Willamette Valley/SW Oregon in late November 1961.

Leaburg recorded 4.37" of precipitation on the 23rd, followed by a snow depth of 6" on the 24th (amount that fell not recorded).

At Lookout Point Dam, 3.83" of precip on the 23rd transitioned to 5.8" of snow on the 24th, their greatest November snowfall on record.

EUG recorded 2.93" on the 22nd, followed by 1.0" of snow on both the 23rd and 24th.

Cottage Grove experienced their wettest day on record with 4.80" on the 22nd, followed by another 3.60" on the 23rd, topped off by a 4.0" snowfall on the 24th.

Interestingly, in the year prior (1960) a major AR also affected the Willamette Valley on the same dates.

*Although it might have been a baroclinic zone. I'm not sure.

I’m a day late but the Puget Sound windstorm on November 24th 1983. I turned 7yrs old that day and got to enjoy that awesome storm on my Birthday! And Turkey via the BBQ since we didn’t have power.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Silver Falls had about 2.4" of rain on the 22nd, an inch the next and then an inch of snow on the 24th. 1961-62 was a pretty incredible winter up here. Several major cold snaps and snow every month Nov-March. With a huge snow event at the end of February through the first few days of March and another snow around March 10th.

1961 is a pretty strong analog this year...at least in my methodology.

I forgot about that one.  Just too much to remember!  I remember all of the interesting stories about how people had to cook their turkeys because of the power outages.

FWIW, that November will end up pretty much opposite of this November.

1961.png

Of course, that doesn't invalidate it as an analog (it was in my initial large group as well, and I still like it from a blockiness standpoint), but I do think it weakens it from a timing perspective. I think a 1961 outcome for December is unlikely at this point, but I still like it for overall winter anomalies.

Well, 1961/62 was +QBO/Niña in a huge solar maximum, so I've never really considered it an analog (this winter is -QBO/Niña approaching solar minimum).

It was the first time I was in awe of the power of wind...we had a huge Maple tree in our backyard and half of it snapped and crashed through our fence...it was so exciting! Yeah I like the wind a little too much, even at 7yrs old!! We were without power for a week, back then it took forever for the repair crews to come and fix the lines since our population was so low back then so we were very low priority. Now we have fifteen trillion people living around here unfortunately.

11/25/1998 storm was 19 years ago today.

I remember this one pretty well. Winds gusted to 100+ mph at some places on the N. Coast (Cannon Beach, etc.) and huge amounts of rain fell.

Calendar day totals were:

9.20" at Falls City #2 (breaking the all-time record of 5.59" from 11/22/1961 - shout out to yesterday's post)

6.44" at Laurel Mountain (10.86" in 2 days)

5.56" at AST (all-time record)

2.11" at PDX

On this day...11/26/06 in the morning the snow started to stick, by 1pm the power was off as the heavy wet snow started taking down trees and limbs. By that night it was still snowing with a foot on the ground...it continued until the evening of the 27th when the arctic front pushed through and temps plummeted to the upper teens. 18” of snow, tree destruction like I have never seen, and no power for nearly a week since the damage was so extensive. That was one hell of an event especially since the forecast called for a sloppy inch with possibly another inch with arctic passage...

11-27

1896 - Seattle low temperature plunges to 15 degrees which is the second coldest November minimum on record for the city.  There was still 2 inches of snow on the ground left from the storm several days earlier.

1985 - The second major snowstorm of the month strikes the Puget Sound region hitting northern areas with very heavy totals, while the Central Sound had several inches on average.  The snowfall IMBY was 3.7" bringing the total depth to 10 inches.  Temperatures were bone chilling with a daily range of 27-17 where I was living in Bothell.

Incredible low level Fraser River push on this day in 1985. SEA had a midnight high of 35 and temps quickly tumbled as the front moved in, with a daytime high of just 21. To the north, near all time record cold set in, Victoria and Vancouver's daytime maxes were just 16 with 15 at Bellingham. Some of the coldest snow ever observed occurred in southern B.C. with Abbotsford seeing 5 degree snowfall early in the morning. The day before, northern Vancouver Island observed similar conditions with a near all time record low of -5 at Campbell River.

Pretty unbelievable.

That whole month is just such an anomaly. It is like the November equivalent of January 1950 or something like that. We have had other huge November cold snaps, but looking at the data it seems there were 3 separate intrusions of cold air that month? No one remembers the cold snap the first half of the month, but SLE even had back to back lows of 19 on the 13th and 14th, and the month was much more brutal further north. Is there another November that even compares? I can't think of one...

Another thing I remember about the day SEA reached 35 is the Arctic boundary was stalled about 2 or 3 miles north of Seattle.  North of the boundary it never got above freezing during that interlude which resulted in many places having 10 or more consecutive days with max temps of 32 or lower.

Yeah, areas north of Seattle saw an incredible run.

- 13 straight days of 33 or colder highs at Monroe

- 10 straight days below freezing at Sedro Wooley

- 13 straight days below freezing for Bellingham

- 14 straight days of 30 or colder at Clearbrook

Those would be impressive numbers in January, even more so in November. I wasn't old enough to remember anything at all about Nov 1985...too bad.

It was amazing.  I actually got used to there being snow on the ground.  The sunny days with snow on the ground was the best part of it...that and watching the snow come down on a number of different days.

It was AMAZING! I was 9yrs old at the time and I remember snow up to my waist and Lake Goodwin froze solid. Also one morning My sister and I walked up to the bus stop (was running 1hr late due to previous snow) as it started snowing...and within 10min it was very heavy snow and the bus never made it...snowed all day...that was the best!!

On this date in 1952 Silver Falls set their daily record low of 12. The fall of 1952 was probably the driest fall on record at Silver Falls and November 1952 has the lowest average low of any November on record with an average low of 23.1. Amazingly the average low of 23.1 is colder than the park's coldest average December low of 23.5 in 1972 and the record for February of 25.3 in 1989. November 1952 closed the month with 9 straight sub-20 lows.

On this date more recently in 2006 Silver Falls set a daily record with 5.0" of snow. The late November 2006 event was a bust in the Willamette Valley, but about a foot of snow fell at the park over a 3-day period of the 28-30th.

Yeah...that 1952 cold snap was quite impressive.  Kind of a real cold / fake cold hybrid.

Was out of town for thanksgiving but I missed this. Just two years ago on 11/24 Bend saw 14” of snow starting Tuesday afternoon before thanksgiving. Plows couldn’t keep up due to heavy snow falling with thanksgiving traffic leaving us with 2-4” ice layer on the roads through the holiday weekend.

That airmass in late Nov 2015 had some bite to it. BNO would go on to tie its monthly record low on three straight days from the 27th-29th, hitting -15 on all three days. Alkali Lake bottomed out at -22 and Paisley hit -17. Very impressive for November. Lots of winters don't get that cold in those places.

It was chilly on the west side. SLE was 35/21 on the 30th and Silver Falls had a high of 32 that day. November through the first week of January that winter wasn't bad, afterwards was terrible though. We had a white Christmas here that year.

Agreed. Two separate airmasses dropped eastern OR into the -20's (early Jan did as well). Not bad for a super Nino.

Monthly record lows were set on today's date in 2006 at Burns Municipal Airport (-15) and McDermitt, NV (-17). The reading in Burns was tied in 2015, as mentioned in yesterday's post.

Also, I didn't mention this a few days ago, but on the 25th - the coldest weather ever observed in Nevada in the month of November occurred in 2010, associated with the major PNW Arctic outbreak at that time. The NV state record for the month was set at Charleston with a reading of -32, with Wildhorse Reservoir close behind at -31. Monthly records were also broken in Ruth (-22) and Ely (-20).

3yrs ago today we had a little residual moisture as the cold air finally filtered in...had snow on the ground and below freezing for nearly a week!

That was probably the biggest blowtorch winter I have ever experienced in the Willamette Valley, but November 2014 did have its moments...

32 years ago today I awoke after several days of my father messing with an annoying 10 year old constantly asking "are those snow clouds?????????" to a coastal snow globe Saturday. He knew it was coming but didn't tell me. 6+ inches of blowing and drifting snow with temperatures in the low-mid 20's. Ho hum considering what's about to roll out this winter but still pretty memorable.

That was the snowiest day of that stretch here, as well. Coastal low!

11-30 (approx) -

1853 - The third extreme AR event of the month combined with very warm temperatures to set the stage for historic flooding in the NW.  To the best of my knowledge the only flood to top this one was 1861.  I have been able to find few details concerning the flooding from this event, but I do know from the Fort Steilacom records rainfall amounts were insane in November 1853.  The third AR event dumped 5.13" of rain at that location in 3 days.

This extreme event very probably set the stage for the extreme Arctic cold wave of January 1854.
