snow_wizard
Looking at Abbotsford that was a wicked arctic front. Midnight high of 34F on the 4th. By afternoon temps had dropped to 17F with 50mph wind driven snow. Interestingly that blast happened in a situation where we went from a death ridge pattern like the one we are entering directly into Arctic cold. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! snow_wizard
Holy crap! The evolution from Nov 27, 1956 to Dec 4, 1956 was epic! From the EXACT pattern we are going to be in to a huge blast in a week. The trigger for the retrogression was another area of high heights approached Western Alaska and then sucked the life out of the death ridge which combined the two into a mega block in the sweet spot. I wonder how the models would have handled that. Quote Death To Warm Anomalies! BLI snowman
1945: Major south windstorm strikes on December 4, 1945, probably the strongest in the 20th century pre-Columbus Day for the general Portland region. The 978mb storm brought 60mph+ winds from near Arcata, CA northward. Wind speeds hit 70mph at Medford, 75mph at Portland, 70mph at Olympia, 62mph at Boeing Field, and 80mph at Port Townsend. 1909: A sizable three day snowstorm began on the 4th and spread south to north, with historic early-season totals occurring around much of the Willamette Valley. Snow depths would peak on the 6th before milder weather kicked in, but totals included 13" at Albany, 15.5" at McMinnville, a depth of 13" at Salem on the 6th, and 10" at Portland. wx_statman
In 1934 and 1935, Fairbanks experienced two opposing temperature extremes at this time of year. The greatest DJF thaw on record occurred from December 4-8, 1934, when maximums reached into the 50's on five consecutive days. The warmth peaked at an incredible 58/40 on the 5th, some 52 degrees above normal for the date. In no other year did Fairbanks even reach 50 during December; it took until 12/4/2011 to reach as warm as 47 at Fairbanks during the month. On the same dates the following year, 1935, the greatest early season cold wave on record affected Fairbanks. Maximums were -52 on the 6th and 7th, the earliest such occurrences on record. Minimums were -58 and -59 on those dates, also the coldest observed so early in the winter. The departure on the 7th (-52/-59) was an incredible 53 degrees below normal.

SilverFallsAndrew
For those interested, here's a post I made a few years ago about the December 2013 cold wave: http://theweatherforums.com/index.php/topic/657-december-2013-cold-wave/ A lot of good stuff there. Pretty interesting that so many stations have their coldest and 2nd coldest days on record on December 8th. Speaks to the general front loaded nature of our winters. We have had some great January cold snaps of course historically, but really it seems like a disproportionate share of our top tier cold waves have come in December. While January historically did better for sustained cold throughout the month. Lots of impressive readings end up not appearing as daily records.
DareDuck
Can’t believe it’s been 4 years. I’ll have to remind my wife tonight that’s it’s been that long since we froze our asses off in our little rinky dink one bedroom shack near campus. As the temp kept dropping below zero I would walk outside briefly just to feel what it was like. Funny to see that Bend was only 5 degrees colder than Eugene that night. Bends mini UHI on display? 10 degrees warmer than all surrounding locations. Two coldest lows falling on the same date is pretty crazy. The -7 on the 7th in 2013 was a record low however. The great tragedy of Oregon's 2013 football season was they had that horrible blowout loss to Arizona which prevented them from playing in the Pac-12 title game. That was back when the higher ranked team hosted the Pac-12 title game, if they could have avoided that road loss to a team they were so much more talented than, they would have hosted the Pac-12 championship game on the night of December 7th. It would have been approaching 0 with 6"+ of fresh snow on the ground. It would have been absolutely epic! Guest happ
NWS_LA "The GFS forecasts onshore flow next Saturday. If this is a correct forecast it would mean that SoCal will have had continuous offshore flow for 13 consecutive days. There have only been 17 streaks longer than 13 days since 1948. The record being a nearly inconceivable 24 days in row back in Dec/Jan of 1951."
