Chicago’s water didn’t taste too bad the last time I visited there, but some Sunbelt cities I’ve visited have horrible-tasting water. I'm particularly thinking of you, Santa Barbara.

The issue with hard water for me isn’t the taste, it’s how it builds up deposits on everything and makes for extra housework removing them.

Mt. Angel, OR has the worst water I have ever encountered. It can ruin appliance pretty quickly, has a strong sulfuric smell, and tastes like rotten eggs.

Hydrogen sulphide. Prosser, WA used to have the same problem. When I lived there, I used a filter. Activated carbon is good at removing it.

Vancouver’s water comes from protected wilderness watersheds. Excellent quality.

It's called clown range for a reason.

The pattern definitely gets better about a week out now.  Can't wait to be out of this ugly pattern.

The water in coastal GA has weird taste too. “Ocean-flavored” is how I’d best describe it. Used to hate it but now it holds a special place in my heart.

My grandparents used to live between Aberdeen and Westport and the water was terrible.  Probably close to what you're describing.

It was pretty jimtastic weather from 11/1-12/23 Couple weeks of this lame weathers really got you down to the point you forget how good it’s already been. Not to mention every winter since 2016-2017.

These rotten Januarys are just a drag.  Very difficult to have a really good winter when January refuses to participate.

I think this winter has dethroned the winter of 2005-06 here for east winds.  Even today had gusts to around 30.  The east wind has barely stopped since the pattern change and it's precluding any chance of sneaking in a cold night when it clears out.

I just can't over the smoke being an annual thing now.  When I was younger, we never had forest fire smoke in this area.  We never even thought of it back then.

If you want to experience a gorgeous place, cold in the winter and pleasant in the summer, you should check out Wallowa Lake. It is somewhat remote but well worth it. I have gone several times in the summer but never in the winter. I do know it gets very cold there with more snow than most of eastern Oregon because it is at about 4000 feet. The mountains are stunning.

I know I am being biased but the best water in the world is Bull Run used by Portland and most east Portland towns. It's so pure the Feds wanted to add chemicals and Portland has fought it. I don't know how that stands at the moment though. Comes from the foothills and runs downhill into town, totally works by gravity. Built in the 1880s.

46F and mostly cloudy. Been a pleasant but warm stretch. Cherishing these days where we don't get to 90F+ regularly like what awaits us from Jun-Oct.

There’s been plenty of very good winters that involved 0 action from January that he’s happy with. I get that historically Januarys good but if we still end up with 3 rounds of snow and cold this winter then who cares?

Heck... even a couple GFS runs that show lots of snow at 300 hours will get him back to saying this winter is amazing and every winter just keeps getting colder.   His despair is very temporary.    Unbridled excitement always comes back quickly.  ;)

In its natural state... western fires and smoke were much worse than what we see today.    Its not even close.

We decided in the 1940s to go full board on fire suppression and that worked well for about 60 years.   But you can only hold back nature so long and now we have a massive fire deficit to pay back.    And a warming climate is accelerating that payback.  The absolute worst fire years now pale in comparison to acreage burned before we started messing with nature.

In other words... what you and others remember from childhood was unfortunately never going to be sustainable.
