Lots of negatives in eastern oregon this morning.

I'm well aware, but I'm guessing the highs aren't as cold as Winthrop.  It's the combination there that is incredible.

Well...I stand corrected on this one.  Pretty impressive max temps in eastern OR as well.  Often that is not the case though.

I’m thinking you just don’t check very often. They had a ton of highs well below freezing over there in November/December as well.

Bad guess. Burns put up a 19/-7 yesterday.

I just did a post about that.  Overall the stats are clearly on my side about max temps in the northern part of Central and Eastern WA vs Eastern OR.

Yeah, Burns can put up some incredible cold numbers. You have to remember some of those towns in eastern Oregon are above 4000’ in basins so they have elevation, and cold air pooling to work with.

Impressive given that 925 temps are well above freezing across the area.

925mb (1).gif

I've learned this year that the 925 temp isn't always the final say so. Me and Chris have had snow a couple times with the 925 above zero. But then I think maybe the observation of the current 925 isn't accurate?

Overall though it is no contest on max temps.  For January Burns is 35.3 or 34.9 depending on the station and Winthrop is 28.7.  These are the norms not this month.

This is why the Okanagan highlands can be colder than any other place in Eastern WA.  There are a few large valleys that are 3500ft.

I get it, Washington, further north. North/south gradient. Fraser Valley. December 1996. I live in Washington too. Cold winter temperatures usually extend pretty far south into the Great Basin though. Omegaraptor would be the first to tell you how cold the climate on the plateaus of Northeastern California can even be! But with a sultry, sexy Mediterranean twist in the summer. 😍

Not sure... here is what the ECMWF shows for current 925 temps.

There is some cold air between your area and the coast.

A couple things are working for their benefit this year. Overall not a lot of strong storms to mix them out, and they have had snow cover since early November. What I’ve noticed for them is when they get a decent snow pack the Harney basin generates a ton of low level cold air. I couldn’t tell you how big the Harney Basin is, but probably not smaller than King County. Check out January 2013 over there. Absolutely bonkers. On the other hand February 2019 and January 1969 were about average there.

Shows 4C here, and it looks like precip starting as sleet right now. Thickness drops to 528 here this afternoon, so upper levels cooling from the west. 925s are fairly irrelevant imo.

Second coldest November to January 20th on record there behind 1985-1986

Crazy. They never really mixed out fully the first half of January when most of the region was having a milder spell. High of just 44 on the 7th. One of only three days above 40 there this month so far.
