The Tim autobot is posting the same thing he posts every January.

I always take note of changes in vegetation in every season... I did this even when I was a little kid in Minnesota and kept a journal documenting the timing of changes.   Technically its called the study of phenology.    I find it fascinating.   I guess as much as some people find the prospect of frost in January to be fascinating and exciting.

That might be part of it... but even our lawn which never had sand or dirt from the plows is showing signs of greening up.   Its pretty common for the grass to be fairly green in the winter around here when we have a long period of warm/wet weather.   What is unusual this year was that it went into the rainy season completely dead brown as I gave up watering in the fall... so I have not seen signs of greening up for a long time.

I normally would be worried about the grass growing because it meant more work but last year for the first time in my life i hired a landscape company. Best money i have spent in a long time. They come out 4 times a month.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Obviously not worried about mowing for another couple months at least.    My wife loves working in the yard but then also complains about being overwhelmed.   I think she might get to the point of hiring someone.    She says having Molly Maid come once a month to clean the house is the best money she has ever spent!

Looks like some low snow levels for sure. Some of the runs are showing maybe some wet snow at night out this way.

Hopefully once we get through a few more torchy days this week we can go back to some more typical January weather. Could even end up colder than January 2022 if we play our cards right!

Part of why it has been so warm. 850mb temps haven't been that outrageous, but there has been a lot of mixing.

Such a strange pattern, all of western Washington has been a torch except the hood canal area where it has been average January temps. mid 40's and mid to upper 30's at night. I would be happy to see some 1500ft snow levels for Oregon and Washington and it looks like that will happen next week.

This in no way precludes a cold/snowy February.    January 2019 was very spring-like.

PDX: 33

Cold spot was Burns as they hit 11. They still have snow on the ground per cams, and actually had some accumulating snow yesterday morning too.

Just glad to be able to look forward to some green grass. One of the things I’ve always liked about winters in this part of the world is that they are, for the most part, green, not bleak and brown like in so much of the world. It was disappointing how late in the season the rains came, and how ugly and brown everything has looked when there has been no snow on the ground.

(Yes, I enjoy snowy weather too, but I like the ground to be green when the snow melts.)

What’s the alternative? Whining endlessly about it?

It’s not as if accepting the reality that this is not shaping up to be a cold January is causing it not to be cold.

And I decided long ago I’m going to have fun here this winter regardless of how much it snows.

To be fair to this month, I'll take this January 100% over...was it last year or the year before where we were stuck under a foggy, windless inversion for what seemed like forever and our air quality tanked through the basement?

I also agree with this!   I will gladly take an active pattern that is warm and occasionally wet over soupy, cold inversions and dry weather.

Kudos to your EPS, it predicted the SHhit pattern we are going to transition from this Schit pattern too. Hopefully we get that retrograde all the long range models are hinting at.

I also agree with this!   I will gladly take an active pattern that is warm and occasionally wet over soupy, cold inversions and dry weather.

Last January was the worst of both worlds, not active, but not super cold inversions. Had some decent lows down this way later in the month, and actually quite a bit of sun. We have not had an endless fog pattern in the WV in many years now.

This January is the worst of both worlds in that it has rained every single day here, but amounts have been pretty meager. We are around 1.5-2" on the month, which is about 50% of average. No sun, tons of mud because very little freezing (4-5 freezes, but no hard freezes.), and warm temps. Just getting CALi's scraps.

The roads this morning were covered in a light layer of white frost and it looked like we have had some very light zr or mixed pricip. It was pretty to look at. No issues driving to  son's school and back.

I told my wife that there were some nice shapes on the car that looked that the Quebec french symbols. Can't pronounce it for my life  because I learned Spanish pronunciation...but she lived in Africa so she can. Her mom can also speak French even though my wife doesn't.

I wish I had a photo from this morning.

Is she from a Francophone nation in Africa?
