STOP SLIDING EAST 😩

This thing is still far from settled.  Hard to even pin down when the climax of the cold will actually be.  This is a retrogression situation so the coldest anoms will begin east of us and move west from there.

I don't think they've seen really any snow at all either

Kind of makes it easier to take when normally cold places are torching way worse than us.  I'm just dying for the below normal temps to begin again.

There hasn't been much cold anywhere in the lower latitudes recently. Even Eastern Europe / Japan are lacking in snow cover.

Seems like some colder air has crept into Central Asia. This is a relatively small lake east of the Caspian Sea (Sarygamysh Lake). It's interesting to watch in the winter because cold airmasses moving it produce snow cover in an otherwise barren landscape, looks like that happened again this past week:

Wow! The wind really kicked up at the end of the video and the visibility really took a hit, too! I wonder if a waterspout came ashore there by any chance, or was it just a strong thunderstorm?

EDIT: I saw on the caption of the video that there was a tornado.

Early demise of the PV looking more likely now, picture gets pretty interesting around the turn of the calendar.

February could be rockin’ for the western 2/3rds of the country esp if Indo-EHEM MJO inception is well timed.

Both ECMWF & GFS agree on cooling of the tropical lower stratosphere as PV weakening/breakdown commences.

If this happens it would destructively interfere with the warm/stable low pass signature associated with the +QBO, and likely augment the MJO. So we might get a bonafide MJO wave next month as a result.

Still curled up but the nearby WU station says it is 43F.
