December Weather In the PNW

25 degrees already.  Clear skies and no freezing fog at my location, but the airport is reporting it.

Down to 24 now... Would not shock me if they pulled off a 19 one of these nights.

28 here...

Seattle did drop to freezing just after midnight...now fogged in.  24 here with high clouds moving in, should provide for a nice sunrise.  4 years ago today it was down to 8 here and -10 in Eugene.

And the growing season finally ends at SEA!

February 26 - December 8

(If it has to be below 32 as the cut off then it was February 2 - December 8)

It was a very quick and brief 9 months.   Time for the long winter nap.   :)

Should be 6 weeks of winter in Seattle this year...

50 degrees at paradise but with 10% humidity!! Good news is we won't loose much snow with the low humidity.

A beautiful 24 degrees at Snoqualmie Pass with snow still on the trees.    Can't imagine it will go above freezing now until the next weather system.

Frosty and 28 here. Beautiful sunrise.

Gorgeous sunrise.

Did the wind die there?   I had to put rocks on the garbage can lids on the street just now because the wind is so strong this morning here.

There is more to the groeing season than temp. . Sun angle has affect as well.

Definitely.   Its a more appropriate concept in the Midwest when cold temps will delay or cut the season short when the sun angle is high.   They always talked about it every year when I was growing up there.

It went down to 29 here. Frost not quite as thick this morning. Colorful sunrise right now.

They put down de icer around here pretty much every time temps drop near freezing. Helps with black ice prevention.

Same for Bellingham, its starting to get pretty nasty in the neighborhoods in the hills NE of town.  The main roads are all treated and in good shape.  Here are a couple of pics from this morning.  One is my driveway which is on the north side of my house (and pretty short/steep.)  The other is at the end of my street.

6z GFS Ensembles. Some improvements for Portland with less 'warmer' members, but nothing too chilly. I do see several colder -5c to -10c members for Seattle, Yakima. The ensemble mean temps needs work though.

Other than that, huge east winds continue in Gresham/Troutdale above the river where gusts 45-56mph have occurred and are ongoing.

The graphics and legend that weather.us is using for the ECMWF surface products is pretty weird and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Speaking from experience though, it's 0.4"-0.6 of liquid falling as snow or 4-6" of snow at Charlotte.

You flying out there tomorrow?

Yeah, butit doesnt look like that is going to happen. At least the NWS is not going for any accumulation for Charlotte.

00z ECMWF is now actually showing 5-7" in Charlotte but temps are looking really marginal (33F-36F). I'm assuming the NWS is hedging their bets on just a bunch of heavy, wet, non sticking snowfall.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

If I wouldn't know any better, I would take that as a dusting of snow!
