Which is uglier climate trend? 1930s/40s decade or the 90s/2000s?

Are we like early 90s where we had a bunch of ugly mild years (excluding 1992 of course!) that lead to a bunch of moderate droughts?   What other periods had similar or uglier years?

Were the  1930s ickier for the PNW then the 90s in terms of mild weather? I'm been very curious about the general circulation between the 1930s and this decade.  There were some (cold) waves thrown in despite the mildness. Which would you prefer to swap just for the sakes of the weather? Would you swap the 90s/2000s for the 1930s/40s climate pattern?

IMO the last half of 1937 through 1942 was absolutely horrible.  Probably the worst 5 year period we have had.  On the other hand the 1932 through early 1937 period was fantastic. If it weren't for 1942-43 the entire late 1937 through early 1946 period would have been putrid.  The good news is what came after that....

Highs 32 or below = 3

Lows 20 or below = 3

Highs 40 or below = 9

1941-42 featured a pretty significant cold stretch.

43-44/44-45/45-46 was a rare trifecta of total suck, though.

Well, both periods did share a boreal winter +NAO background state.

That would be good for the east coast am I correct?

Ironically, +NAO decades have featured much bigger blizzards here than -NAO decades. From 1959-1977, this area didn’t see a single snowstorm at/above 20”.

Since 1978, we’ve seen nine storms dumping 20”+, and five of them have occurred during the last decade alone.

very interesting

It has been discussed on here many times how the whole -NAO thing being epic for the East and terrible for the West is a myth.  Jan 1969 was one of the most -NAO Januaries on record and we got pummeled that month.

yeah unfortunately it not really the weenies in this case as it's the pro Mets that really started this nao hype which is unfortunate as it's being mislead by a lot of the promets to the plubic.in fact one could make a case that it's more variable and it effects depends on the enso more so la niña neuturl El Nino all seem to behave differently nao wise.

Yeah, and 2014/15 was one of the most prolific +NAO winters on record, and was one of the lamest DJF’s on record in the western US. Usually helps to have some ridging in NE Canada (-NAO) to keep cold air bottled in SW Canada, where it can be more easily delivered into the PNW.

it just puzzling those how many pro Mets will say how the - nao benefits the east northeast when the facts show there is way more to it.the pro Mets could use some restudying on the nao.

What's your take on the NAO predictions? Could that be what's F-king up the NE Pacific Index Snow Whizard so highly regarded?

l Nino didn't do it's usual thing.  A rare combination but I do have full faith in the NAO more then the NE Pacific Index.  The Atlantic is quite powerful and is able to shape things down stream.

The Pacific is upstream from the Atlantic.
