Also begs the question of why he didn't harm the dog (think I read that he's a vegan) or attack the roommate if he saw her. 

Yeah, I thought the roommate seeing him was weird. My wife used to live in a big house with 4-5 roommates and said in that context it might have been weird, but that in a house like that, seeing people you don't know come and go is pretty common. Also they could have been heavily intoxicated and not really been able to process what they were seeing.
