1/21 - 1/23 Plains/Midwest Blizzard

A lot of people were disappointed that we didn't get the big storm, some were really happy.  I think students today figured out they had a snow day yesterday and were happy about it.   We probably have 3 more days ( they build in extra time - hours not days according to our contract) in the calendar, typically comes out to 4 days along with a late start.  We have had 1 late start and 1 snow day.  With our stormiest months on average still ahead of us, our supt. said he considered a late start this morning but decided on a regular day.  He said if we would have gotten what was predicted we probably would have used 2 days and a late start then we start getting close to making up time.

I know a guy who teaches in Grand Island Public Schools.  They had a 2nd snow day in a row today.   They only build 1 day into their calendar.  Today they must make up and all future days will need to be made up.

At our school the first day we would use as a makeup day is the Monday after Easter.  Any other days go on the end of the year that is supposed to end on May 17th.

Here's Omaha's page for the winter storm with snowfall maps, reports, and wind reports:

http://www.weather.gov/oax/20180122blizzard

Omaha's airport is on the very east side of town along the Missouri River and they only had 1", yet when you go to the western suburbs that are 10-15 miles away, than you have 5-6". What a gradient!

I'm about 9 miles away and had 4".

What was with the high totals in SE Wisconsin?  Was that the stuff that came through late last night and early this AM?  Models had been showing some back side snow, but only 1-2".  Looks like they were on to the right idea, but way under did totals.  That's a nice surprise for those people.

Weird how KLNK only got 1.8". They had like the best banding but the rest of the city had more than that.

There's got to be something wrong with how they measure. They always record less than what the city gets. I get for most storms some parts of Lincoln get more than other parts, but this has been an issue since 2009.

Formerly *ahem*: LNK_Weather, TOL_Weather, FAR_Weather, MSP_Weather, IMoveALot_Weather.

Our airport is always way lower than everyone else too. The media always always comments on how much lower they are than the rest of the area.

It's called wind-swept wide open spaces. Everything just blows away! Especially if winds are that strong. Prolly some massive drift at the property fence line down wind, but they can't/don't take that into account, lol
