May 2018 Observations and Discussion

From what you've experienced back in April, this is probably the craziest flip to summer you'll ever see!  It was just about 42 days ago the big April Blizzard hit your area.

Meantime, back-to-back Hundo's for OMA???

@IllinoisWx, aren't you glad you came to Chicago?

One of the most extreme turnarounds I can ever remember. Took a dip in the lake this afternoon. Water temp already up to 74.

Interesting tidbit:

#Omaha has hit 100° two days in a row yesterday and today. The "only" other time that has happened in May was May 29th-May 31, 1934, which was in the middle of the dust bowl. And that summer went on to be the 3rd driest summer on record. #themoreyouknow #newx

Baffin Bay- "The bay is not navigable most of the year because of the ice cover and high density of floating ice and icebergs in the open areas."

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

"Sea ice in the Hudson Bay usually does not begin to retreat until the end of May."

"Arctic sea ice extent for April 2018 averaged 13.71 million square kilometers (5.29 million square miles). This was 980,000 square kilometers (378,400 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average and only 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 square miles) above the record low April extent set in 2016. Given the uncertainty in measurements, NSIDC considers 2016 and 2018 as tying for lowest April sea ice extent on record."

Seems like we're not doing too good GLOBALLY on ice cover to me. I know I'm part of the conspiracy theory pitching, "liberal media." You should see my bank account, I'm so rich from pushing this agenda :D Stupid scientists and their clean energy sources ideas and forcing companies to be cleaner with their emissions and cars to be more fuel efficient and produce less emissions and thinking deforestation is a bad thing, etc etc etc.

Cite pre-1980 non-adjusted data with the 1980+ data. No one does or will. Until then, there's no point in debate. We should throw snow and temperature records out that are pre-1980 also huh? Filter only temps that appear "too cold" while not even remotely questioning those that are too warm. Do the Arctic/Antarctic have the sensory coverage that the rest of the landmasses have? Nope. I know Antarctica doesn't. Cities are radiating 2-3°F+ into the temperature record. Undeniable fact also.

Excessive heat watch and air quality alert issued for tomorrow.

Ironically, your the first one to get one of these excessive heat advisories in our sub and your the farthest north!  Enjoy the day!

I believe the Twin Cities metro has different criteria than other places regarding the issuance of heat advisories (i.e. more liberal with the advisories). I think it’s due to the fact that two cities are so close to another another and the major UHI effects. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find the differences when I researched it. Anyway, 100F now being forecasted. I’ll be enjoying the day inside!

Just finished my morning B Day walk and noticeably more humid today (65F DP) compared to yesterday's mid 50's DP's.  Heading to the gym to do a full body pump and feast on good food all day.  Happy Memorial Day everyone, more importantly, thank you to all the vets who have served and current serving our armed forces who keep the "land of the free" and "home of the brave" safe for all of us to enjoy the freedoms it brings.  #USA

First off Happy Memorial Day!

I was out for my morning walk and boy it sure did get warm quick started off not real bad but in no time it became very hot.

Yesterdays high of 93° at Grand Rapids set a new record high for May 27th a new record was also set at Muskegon with a high of 87° Todays record at Grand Rapids is 92 the record at Muskegon is 89° so records will be in play once again today.  BTW the record at Lansing is a reported 96° set way back in 1874 but most locations do not have records going that far back. Once location that does go back that far does NOT support the Lansing record. Detroit only had a high of 89° on May 28th 1874 while that in its self would not indicate much it still puts that 96 is some doubt.

Already a temp of 85 and a 66 DP at 9:30. Today’s forecast would be ugly in late July let alone late May. A 90F temp happens about one in every three years here in May. If we hit 100 today it will be rather unprecedented.

Hi-res models showing some convection firing tonight. That would be a good thing as we need some precip.

Yup, turned 36 today, I feel great and I’m more optimistic about the future than ever before. It’s a wonderful feeling to be a proud American!

Happy memorial day, friends. We are a blessed nation. The cost of freedom is humbling to think of and I'm a grateful man for it.

attachicon.gifu4560_cat.jpg

What it's about ^^^ right there!

Hope everyone's having the best MD possible in spite of all the heat.

92F so far at KRMY. Played my round of golf early this morn to beat the heat. Dew was so heavy tho! Trade-offs I guess. Played with my boys who have commencement Thurs evening. Sure hoping it's not pushed in-doors by Alberto. We had one of the 'caines last autumn not come as far north as originally progged. Not sure this one can stay south but sure would be nice. Everything's as green as can be and I'm still waiting for the b-ment to dry up. We don't need it for the moisture so I'd gladly give it to anyone else..

@ Tom

Happy B-day amigo! So great to read/see somebody like yourself with such a positive outlook. Thanks for spreading some of that around in this sub-forum too.  ;)

What a B Day treat nature is delivering out here. Current temp is a comfy 81F with a nice stiff breeze coming of the lake.

Driving home from my morning golf date I couldn't help but think how strange it was to see the large flag blowing from the NW while my car thermo was reading in the 90's! Usually we'd get this with a S or SW warm wind direction. When I hit the x-way tarmac temp bounced up to 97F  My a/c is blasting non-stop attm.

The outflow from the Wisconsin storms made it back into Iowa and stalled just south and west of here.  The result was we got stuck in the pooled dews along the boundary, 74F at one point a couple hours ago.  The higher dew has kept us a couple degrees behind yesterday, but it feels worse.

Storms are now firing along the boundary, but should remain south and west of me.

On May 6th, people were skiing down rib mountain at Granite Peak in Wausau, WI. 20 days later, the temps were 91 and 93 there this weekend. Similarly, there were 4ft snow drifts and frozen lakes in Eagle River. This weekend had temps in the low 90s with people swimming, waterskiing and tubing. Simply amazing change of events in just 20 days.

With todays high of 93° For the 2nd day in a row a new record high was set at Grand Rapids. And at Muskegon todays high of 95 sets a new record not only for the date but for the month of May. Note there was a E and SE wind today and that helped with the record high at Muskegon with a little help with down slopping.

I'm back in Lincoln. Everyone around us is getting soaked, but we have seen sitting dry here all day. Typical Lincoln. We just had a huge burst of Southerly winds about 15 minutes ago but that died down. 87.3*F.

Yep same exact thing here in Omaha... been watching storms bubble up to our south and west all afternoon, however everything has died off as soon as it gets within a few miles of the metro thanks to all of the outflow boundaries from the storms that have been dying off after they pulse up.

It’s cooled down here as well, down to 84 and it feels much more bearable outside to say the least.

Been without power for over 2 hours now. The strong winds during the storm knocked out power to the entire neighborhood. Fortunately the rain brought temps down to the low 80s. Still 77 in the house but it’s getting noticeably warmer in here. Looks like storms refining to the west.

He left late last week from OMA to MIA with his family to take a Caribbean cruise.  It's been pouring rain across parts of NE/KS where the drought is rough.  Nice to see that part of the world get the rain they need desperately.
