PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

Too much dry air here…haven’t gone out and measured yet…but we’re somewhere between 1/4”-1/2”. Good enough to get on the board though!

We will see if we can manage anything else, officially 0.2” here. Was hoping for more but 1/4”-1/2” was about what I expected based on the models. Just happy it wasn’t a total shutout here. Unfortunately this snow will probably mostly subliminate today despite temps struggling to hit freezing. 27 here currently.

Wow... great updates this morning!

Nothing here overnight.    I think almost everyone has had measureable snow in the last couple days... except for maybe south King County which was too far south on Tuesday and too far north last night.    Everyone gets snow on Sunday.

I didn't even get a flake in Gold Bar, but that's okay. I got 16" in November, so I can't be too greedy I guess. I'm just happy for everyone else. Maybe I'll score this weekend or something.

Nothing for most of Skagit County since the quarter inch at the end of January, but it's been a good run in the past couple years so no complaining. Kind of shockingly warm up here still though. I haven't dropped below 30F which I think will make a subfreezing high today almost impossible, although the dew point is finally on the way down. It was 24F at midnight and is now down to 14F.

Yeah... was thinking that western Whatcom County was also missed in terms of measureable snow.

But Sunday will make it up for everyone.

At 5 a.m. SEA was reporting light snow with a dewpoint of 4 and an east wind gusting to almost 30 mph.     Pretty crazy to have precip reach the ground with those conditions.

Just watched the 8-hour radar loop from the UW site... amazing how that second band came up from the south and just pounded the side south and west side of Portland to even things out down there.

25 and partly cloudy. Haven’t measured yet this morning, but even just getting clipped by that energy last night buried us. Feeling pretty good about getting into the mid 20s with the wind shift not even occurring yet.

The 06z GFS would be historic.

0.0” of snow on the east shore of lake tapps. It’s like we were nothing but a dry air sync all night. But holy crap was the wind ever impressive! 26 degrees this AM.

On my way into work this morning I was passing Tapps Island about 3:30am and I was getting blown around pretty good.  I drive a heavy 1 ton truck and it takes a a pretty stiff wind to push me around.

Wow I was just a few miles from the cutoff. 0 snow once you got down to fife and federal way. Was just far enough SW to score. Feel pretty fortunate about that. Models seemed to handle the cutoff zone with the dry air really well. Had the cutoff been about 3 miles more SW…wouldn’t have gotten anything.

We’re up to 6.5” so far on the season…with what will likely be the biggest snowfall of the season Saturday night into Sunday morning. This winters shaped up to be a very solid one IMBY. Never had a big snow event…with our max snow depth of 2” so far. However 2 significant arctic outbreaks and 10 separate snowfalls is very good…with the 11th one coming in less than 72 hours.

Also interesting that Portland had one of their biggest snowstorms ever at the same time as a roaring blizzard across the Midwest.    Crazy weather pattern across the western US right now.

Not sure how much snow Salem got. I have seen 4-6” reported in social media for south Salem, and someone said they had 3” in an hour in west Salem.  Not sure what the core of the city got though it looks like a couple inches at least. McMinnville and Molalla both kind of got snow holed.

Looks like 6.1" from this storm total. Definitely an amazing storm, that snow overnight was extremely heavy. So much wind and a lot of drifts outside. Received 3-4" from 1 to 3 am with those bands

Glad you scored. I made it from orenco to scappoose via skyline and back roads at 9pm. It was wild. Only took 45 mins. But I used to live up there so I am used to it.

Looking at the models…there’s multiple systems that could bring snow very close to sea level even after the sunday system. Especially if the systems come in during the overnight hours.

The NWS should be dragged put back and shot,  this is the 2nd time this area has reached warning level snowfall and not be under a warning. The first time we had 9 inches and not even under a advisory! This is the only time in all the years this has happened and it's just been this year. I blame it on this younger generation of forecasting people in the office with no experience for Western Washington winters and they just use this model blend bullshit and really don't pay attention to what's actually happening outside or the general large scale pattern and what can and what had happened in the past with similar situations.  The NWS of Seattle is a joke and I hope they read this. Portland office is better and Spokane office is awesome!

Portland office isn't much better lol. Their forecasts yesterday before the snow started was a WWA from the central/south Valley and absolutely nothing for PDX. Then they changed it to a advisory above 500 ft or something, then a winter storm warning that was still way too low after the snow had already been accumulating for a while in portions of the Metro. And then we had a blizzard after the warning expires
