PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

Checking out the extended GEFS, just have to say, it is time for this winter to put up or shut up.

Some places did pretty well the first half of the winter.  One more solid event would ice it for my area to have what I would call a decent winter.  It would take something pretty top drawer for me to call it a great winter though.

November is the only thing holding this winter up from dud status here. On the other hand, at this point in 2018 and 2019 we were sitting with nearly no snow on the season. Overall November and most of December were pretty cold though, its been a pretty uneventful season though. We've had a couple decent wind events, but the rain events have been mostly light. January was very dry compared to average, even though it rained pretty much every day the first 3 weeks of the month.

27.9 here, but 39 at Troutdale(airport) with breezy east winds. Those will develop here soon as well.

Aside from places near the gorge, most of the inland valleys in W. Oregon are in the upper 20s now. Around freezing in the Umpqua Basin, and upper 20s in the Rogue Basin at Medford and Grants Pass.

The first half of January was horrific.  We had a lot of wind here, but east winds are typical here in the winter.  All in all I would give the late Nov to Dec 22 period a pretty good grade here.  The last two weeks have actually been pretty chilly with some flakes on a couple of days.

what could've been instead of an ice storm in december 🤮

can't even really count that for much and still upset over it.

That was actually the most enjoyable ice event I've had here.  Barely any ice on the trees, but a thick layer on the ground.  We had some snow before the big cold wave as well.

Bro, one day at a time.

There are things far more important than an online discussion forum but I hear what you're saying.

I liked the 6z. Think we’re getting somewhere

Sort of feels like it now.... seems to be some consensus for the period starting around 2/17.   Now we need it to hold for the next couple weeks.

By the middle of February it will be about 8 weeks (since 12/24) without any meaningful snow in my area which is pretty long.  A period which covers the heart of the cold season.   Of course we had a truly crazy period here right before Christmas with multiple significant snow events and arctic cold and an ice storm (and 3 extended power outages).   In terms of tangible weather... it has been extremely quiet since Christmas Eve and feels like all craziness this winter has been focused in 10-day period.   At this point I would definitely call this a front-loaded winter.    Subject to change in the second half of February!

The long period of mostly boring weather, along with the longer days, definitely has me eyeing the deck cushions. I’ll get excited for snow if it happens, but if not I’m ready for spring.

Wind chills could reach -100°F or lower on Mt. Washington Friday night. 😶 Would love to experience that for just a few seconds.

Temp might be 39 degrees but the grass is frozen this morning so I checked the DP and it is 25 so that explains that.
Nice morning. Another sign of spring…The Squirrels have started tormenting the dogs again!

saw that when I interned up there at the Observatory in the winter of 2000-01.  place is insane in winter.

I think they still do the winter internship program, you'd be a great candidate.  its was however unpaid when I did.  2 weeks on the mtn, 2 weeks off mtn at home in the valley.  rinse>repeat.  riding the snowcat up the auto road was fun and skiing back down the auto road at shift change was cool too

Last week was gloomy and drizzly as well. The cold snap was a nice break from it.

It's called clown range for a reason.

HIO hit 19 this morning apparently?! Though the coldest I see on the 5 min obs is 21. So we'll see. Supposedly this is the coldest 5 night stretch of lows in the Portland Metro area since January 2017.
