This morning Honolulu appears to be in the crosshairs however all islands will see damaging winds and record rain. As Kiluea continues to erupt, though not as vigorously as before, the islands will be dealing with its second disaster in less than a year. _______________ https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/21/us/hurricane-lane-hawaii-wxc/index.html The storm was moving westward at 10 mph (16 km/h) and should continue to move west through Tuesday night. But forecasts indicate Lane will turn in a more northerly direction by Wednesday, which will bring the center of storm very close to Hawaii and Maui on Thursday, the Hurricane Center said.Hurricane Lane poses a "potential threat to life and property," according to the NWS, and "efforts to protect property should now be underway." Andie
The National Weather Service's Central Pacific Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. ET advisory that Lane, which is likely to cause catastrophic damage with winds 155 mph or above, is located about 460 miles south-southeast of Honolulu and moving west-northwest at 9 mph. The storm strengthened to a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds before slightly weakening, but hurricane warnings are in effect for Hawaii's Big Island and the island of Maui. "Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is forecast to remain a dangerous hurricane as it draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands," the CPHC said.Fox News-__________________________Hurricane Lane is looking like it will track over Kiluea. With the new lava field I'm wondering if homes nearby that are still standing will be subjected to more flooding due to runoff. Odd that they should evacuate due to fire and may lose their homes due to flood. This has been such a strange year weather and earthquake wise. Andie
Yeah, I hate to see it. Hawaii is a national treasure. Now they're calling for 30-40" of rain in areas because of the slow moving of the storm - 5 mph. That's hard to wrap you head around. Hope they're wrong on this point. Andie
High winds from Hurricane Lane are being blamed for starting a brush fire in Lahaina on the island of Maui. (Aug. 24) Yeah, no kidding here. 100 homes evacuated and 100+ aces burned. When you think of this year, the islands have seen volcanic disaster, earthquakes, hurricane, and wildfire. That's a lot of trouble for a small place. Andie
Top wind speed hit a Cat 5 160mph, out at sea. Lane was a flooding event by and large, but I'm sure residents wouldn't agree with that. Wind and wildfire added to the worries and damage. _____________________________________________________ NOHW40 PHFO 250823 PNSHFO HIZ001>028-252030- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Honolulu HI 1023 PM HST Fri Aug 24 2018 ...LANE PRODUCES TORRENTIAL RAINFALL OVER THE BIG ISLAND...
