October 2018 Observations and Discussion

Once again, we did not freeze this morning here in the city.  However, there's a solid frost and all the real tender plants are toast.  Fortunately, there is only one hummingbird remaining.

The rest of October looks like a real snoozer.

Got back to the freezing mark here last night. First morning I saw frost on all the cars, as the night before last we hit the lower 20s but it ended up being too windy for frost formation. Now we enter the boring pattern. 33.4*F.

no kiddin. This year tho, it's more likely we'll need to start a "Michigan, Chicago, anybody NOT Nebraska, Kansas, or Oklahoma" complaint thread.

I agree! :D

No frost here last night. The sky did clear out before daybreak but there was a wind and the low here at my house was 36° and the official low was 37 at the airport. So far the coldest it has gotten here this season at GRR is 36°

While there is some color and some leaf drop here in the GR area there are still a lot of leaves still on the trees. So that said For any one who is interested I found a site that keeps track of the color change.

https://www.foliagenetwork.com/index.php/foliage-reports

In looking at their reports it looks like this year is near or even ahead of 2017 and 2016 But behind to way behind the years of 2008 to 2015. In looking at the color change time to the total snow fall the the winter there does not seem to be much of a trend. So based on this years late color change the winter could still go either way (if you want to believe that leaf change can foretell the upcoming winter) if you do then I guess this winter will be similar to the last two.

The coldest low at Grand Rapids in Feb 1899 was -24 on the 13th and 14th.  On February 10th the high was -6 and the low was -21 on the 11th the high was 0 and the low was -21 on the 10th the high was 0 and the low was -23° Over at Muskegon the lowest day that month were Feb 11th with a high of -3 and a low of -30 and on the 12th the high was -1 and the low was -29 The coldest low reported at Detroit in February of 1899 was -13  not sure where the reports were taken in Detroit in 1899 but in Grand Rapids they were recorded downtown at that time.

My guess is that these lows were colder than advertised. Keep in mind that this Arctic invasion was super cold. All time records were broken.

Nice data digging there westMJim. My earlier post mentioned "The Big Freeze-up" of 1994 across the UP and far NMI. Not certain it reached the depths of the Feb 1899 outbreak, but the duration was much longer. I thought that NOAA kept records for Grayling Army Airfield but I couldn't find any in NOWdata nor a general search. Most locations I did look at across NMI featured 14 to 17 morning lows below zero during Jan '94. Here's an example from Vanderbilt (I worked with a guy from there at the time). UP temps were even colder!

As posted below, only got to 35F (2nd time). Much like last autumn, the residual cold coming across Lake Michigan just isn't that potent.

Same we've seen for at least a few years now where SEMI has been colder than SWMI. Strange pattern and I for one would like to see it end any time, lol

Per NOAA:

Surface ridging tucked beneath confluent mid level northwest flow
will maintain dry and stable conditions on Thursday. Assuming a high
degree of insolation, modest recovery from those cold morning
temperatures will still leave daytime highs a good 10-12 degrees
below normal - upper 40s to lower 50s. Another brief recovery in the
upper height field as shortwave ridging translates through will
provide a modest warming trend into Friday. A piece of the closed
mid level circulation currently parked over the desert southwest
will eventually shear into the mean flow, with recent guidance
pointing to late Friday into Friday night. This will bring the next
shot of rainfall. Long range model guidance pointing to another
solid push of colder air for next weekend, even suggesting this
stretch of below average temperatures could linger right into the
early part of the next week.

Chilly weather to persist according to NOAA.

Another 1898 record smashed at DFW...

Breaking records left and right! It was a rare and unusual October day where we broke both the record low and the record coldest high! Not only that - but this was the earliest we've seen highs in the 40s since records began in 1898! #wfaaweather

Yesterday, was a very breezy day along with plentiful sunshine which ended up being a very nice Autumn day.  I remember somebody on here, one of the Chicago posters, once mentioned before that during the winters of the late 70's, he recalled how windy the Autumn's were back then.  With yesterday's breezy day and a few more days this week, maybe the atmosphere is getting primed, esp with such strong Clippers/Storms tracking just to our north this week laying down the snow pack.  I actually enjoy windy days and seeing the leaves being blown around the trees.  Gives me that true Autumn feel.

Last night's Euro run drops a deeper trough across the MW/GL's region this weekendand ushers in the seasons coldest air to date.  Hard Freeze may be on tap for a lot of us on here Sat night.  Low/mid 20's for our IA/MN/WI members.

Finally, I'm finding a transitional period in the 6-10 day which happens when the -EPO breaks down and allows a trough to target the PAC NW while a Hudson Bay ridge blossoms.  That ridge in Canada is a preview of what I think could be Exhibit B of the LRC.  This pattern, reminds me vividly of a similar period/pattern that transpired last year in almost the same exact scenario.  Back during Oct 20th-25th 2017, a big trough hit the PAC NW, sending a piece of energy that dug into the deep south and then turned NNE phasing with a northern piece of energy into a  GL's Bomb.  Now, are we setting up a similar situation???  Gosh, it sure looks like it.

Check out the 00z GEFS 500mb animation...almost identical situation (even to the date, albeit a couple days later this year)...however, this pattern may include a tropical systems influence coming out of the GOM and phasing with the northern energy.  This scenario may be the 2nd highlight storm of this year's cycle.

Much like what happened on October 11th and 13th the high for today 51° happened overnight before a cold front came through the low here at my house was 41 but is now back up to 43.  I wonder if that will be a trend this cold season?  For the month of October Grand Rapids now has a mean temperature of 56.3° that is still +2.7° the highest for the month is 84° and the coldest so far is a mild 36°.  Over at Muskegon the mean is 56.3° that is good for a departure of +3.0 the warmest for this month there is 83 and the coldest so far is a mild 35.  So both Grand Rapids nor Muskegon has gotten down to 32 yet this fall season.  While we have been above average in in west Michigan off to our north that has not been the case at Marquette their mean so far this October is 40.4° and that is -5.8 the warmest up there is just 66 and the coldest so far has been 25° and they have recorded 2.5” of snow fall so far.

I really really do NOT think that the cold and snow will be confined/arranged at all like 1898-99. An example of severe cold is the best use for that year.

I would also like to say that I believe I have mistaken October 2000 as the coldest for Tulsa and I was incorrect. The coldest is 2009. Close followers are 1917 and 2002. There is a correlation to October temps and ENSO here so we'll see how the rest of the month plays out. My understanding is that the EURO gives only one more "break". That is impressive and not like 1898.

As I recall the winter in 2009 was a very overcast winter with several snow events in DFW area.

My place SW of Ft. Worth received a good deal of snow. If this happens again this winter I won't be complaining except for Texas drivers who are NOT ice and snow drivers.

We're overcast this morning after a low of 50*. Currently 52* with rain moving up from Central Texas a few heavier embedded cells.

High today of 54* and rain.

A lot will depend on how much if any clearing takes place. Where in Macomb county do you live? Areas closer to metro Detroit in Macomb county  warmer then much of lower Michigan.

Everyone goes below freezing tanite, even downtown Detroit. Widespread Freeze will take place. Detroit will be in the upper 20s to near 30F, but the suburbs to the north and west are dipping quite low.

@Tom.....you asked me several weeks ago about the shortest amount of time between measurable snows at the end of a season and the start of the next at MSP. MPX must have received multiple inquiries about it because they just tweeted the response. We went 180 days between measurable snowfalls this year, tied for 16th shortest timeframe. 137 days is the record, set in 1925.

Still raining from DFW down to far SW Texas

It's getting rather damp around here.  Importing some new problems in the neighborhood!

I was hopeful a year ago that it was going to be a re-curing portion of the LRC. That wasn't to be the case tho. Is there anything different this season that might provide a more favorable environment to actually get a repeat during winter? (presuming it even happens the first time now ofc)
