December 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

A couple of cell phone pics from today. Certainly not the epic views of Mt. Si, closer to this system to the south it was mainly overcast, windy and with some upslope fog. Things have since cleared a little bit. Patches of snow started around the 1,800' level.

It was certainly nice to get away from the city for a quiet hike though.

Cascades reflecting the setting sun...

That is a sight that will never get old and something I miss about living in the puget sound. Growing up, my family and I lived in a location situated perfectly to where the Olympics and Mt. Ranier were visible when it was clear. Olympics could be seen out one window, Mt. Ranier out the other...

In other words, the effects from this SSW event will almost solely result from “top down” style forcing (IE: the high latitude blocking will downwell from the upper atmosphere).

Which can take 2-4 weeks following the SSW, which just started a few days ago. So..gonna be a longer wait with this one.

January, here we come?

The 18z GFS jumped on board the wave-2/split train in a huge way. Really nukes the motherf**ker.

But again, given the reliance on top-down style dynamics with this event, it might take awhile for the effects to manifest in the troposphere.

Y’all are more than welcome to come up here and experience it first hand. I’ll make pasta.

Do you think the PNW could see an arctic blast with the SSW around mid January?

Funny how sometimes a inexpensive gift can steal the show. Bought my nephew some nice stuff but also a slinky. Guess what everyone wants to play with. The slinky!!

My daughter was famous for that when she was younger. Seemed like she was just f*cking with us.

Of course now she’s laser-focused on things with hefty price tags...

Any hope for some interesting weather in the next week or two? And by interesting I don't mean Tim-interesting.

Had a good time doing Christmas with the kids. Hopefully will get to enjoy a snowy one in the years to come.

Wow, we do have something in common, used to be at my parents parental dwellings, and now it's at just my parents. Tomorrow we will be seeing what Santa drops off here at home and then off back to my folks for s prime rib lunch and more gifts!!
