Would be awesome to have a repeat of yesterday’s snow again next weekend, if that were to happen I would have had measurable snow in November, December, January, February, March, and April! 😀

That trough late next week keeps trending colder and deeper. Looks like a bonda fide top tier April airmass now; solid chance at putting up another April freeze, for the second year in a row. Last time that happened was in 1975 (29F) and 1976 (30F).

If KSEA goes below 32F, it will be the coldest temperature recorded in April since 1976.

Really impressive that we've managed measurable snow on April 11th last year and now March 25th this year (though PDX didn't get anything). Before last year March 25th was the latest sticking snow at PDX in 1965.  Very unlikely but the GEM actually shows some snow in the air towards the end and then lows in the 20s for the Willamette Valley.

Also April 1975 looks insane for the entire country. Kansas City had a 31/19 day with 2.3" of snow and then dropped to 12 degrees, and Chicago had a subfreezing day and a 10" snowstorm. Denver dropped to -2

I remember that Chicago snowstorm! It was more like 14" where I was living with my parents. It was the heaviest snowfall I experienced in my years living in that area, and the only significant April snowfall I experienced there.

El Niño's are pretty decent at windstorms. The 2013-15 stretch is a good example, which includes the extreme outlier August 2015 windstorm! Jet action in August...wild stuff

That was a pretty awesome event…We were in Sun Lakes when it hit which gave me some amazing jetsking waves! Came home the next day to no power, and my BBQ was not happy.

6z NWS/NCEP Pacific Surface Analysis, 6z GFS Simulated IR

3/27/23 5:50 AM
Here we are in late March and a system off the southern Oregon Coast is projected to undergo Bombogenesis. What's that? It's when an area of low pressure rapidly deepens 24mb or greater within a 24 hour period. This system will definitely achieve that. This is Mother Nature's version of March Madness!

In fact, the 6z NWS/NCEP Pacific Surface Analysis forecasts a surface low to develop and deepen 35mb from 1013mb(29.91 in) to 978mb(28.88 in) in 18-24 hours. That's very impressive. Bummer this won't plow into us. If it had though we would be seeing some major wind issues, so perhaps it's for the best that it won't.

All models keep it well offshore sinking south the next 48 hours. It will only affect us with wrap around moisture tomorrow moving up from the south and gusty east winds due to high pressure inland over eastern Washington and the unusually strong storm offshore.

Check out the 6z GFS Simulated IR Satellite imagery showing a classic mid-latitude cyclone with the low tightly wrapped up and large dry slot punching into it. Cinnamon Roll. This is going to be fun to watch on IR/WV loop by this evening into tomorrow!

That  is a mind blowing stat... I had to look it up to be sure.    I thought early April freezes at SEA were more common.

Pretty hard to get below freezing by this time of year near the sound in the urban banana belt. We’ve had 5 or 6 freezes in April IMBY since 2005 IIRC…3 of those were last year. Never below 32 however in any of those years.
