PNW March 2023 Weather Discussion (2012 Redux)

Requiem

SEA just missed 60... came in at 59.     Should get to 60 the next 2 days.    Normally there 5 days at 60+ degrees in March and currently at 4 so a chance we end up with more 60-degree days than normal in an otherwise cold month.

This came up on Facebook today... sounds like it was a very well researched and important study on which cities have the worst weather. 😀

https://www.alottravel.com/article/vertical/slideshow/us-cities-with-the-worst-weather/9227/1?camp_id=213576&utm_campaign=213576&utm_content=23853851775330023&utm_medium=23853851770420023&utm_source=fb&fbclid=IwAR3Gvc4kf54UZrx8ZVLb5fHt8pNjjt_VuFBZOlj-VvkNONMKXKhaV91uIe8

They were not kind to Portland.    Sounds like a horrible place.   Can't grow anything!    This how cities get really bad and misguided reputations.   Comically stupid.

Portland, Oregon

u9227_slide_28221.jpg

Portland doesn’t get a lot of sun. On average, the city has 222 heavily clouded days out of the year. That makes it tough to grow literally anything other than roses. Roses don’t require a lot of sun and love cloudy weather, so that’s why Portland is often referred to as “the City of Roses.” Maybe that’s why food is so expensive there!

While the city itself rarely sees much snow, the surrounding suburbs do sometimes have issues with snow and ice thanks to the fact that they are at a higher elevation than Portland proper is. All in all, this is the best advice we have for surviving the dreary Portland weather: invest in a good umbrella!

Best combo of a spring in awhile, dry warm spells mixed with cool/coldish moist goodness.  We decided not to grow any veggies this year due to a possible move by the end of summer so no worries on having a good growing season on our minds, variable/volatile swinging weather patterns is where it is at!!

Here's some fodder for us bored schmucks to toss our stubby digits at... What's your favorite park near where you live? Attach a pic, too, if you got any.

I'll start first, Discovery Park:

So many days like that in the last couple of months.   We have really been blessed up here considering the crazy troughing across the west over the last 6 weeks.

No... pretty sure its blessed.   When western WA is being hit hard it usually means CA is high and dry.    This has been a blessing for everyone.

High of 43º at EUG is a new daily record low max (45º in 1985).

0.27" of rain here this evening, finally bringing the season total to above 20 inches. Still more than 10" below normal, but it feels good to be out of the semi-arid teens.

That plus a forecast that looks good for more rain and mountain snow over the next couple of weeks is better for my drought anxiety than any amount of Valium.

Beautiful day here. Would've been really fun 2 months ago.

50 at SEA and in North Bend this morning... both with an east wind.   Looks like the cloud shield is shearing apart and thinning as I can see stars out there.   Should be another nice day up here.

00Z ECMWF was truly nuts... looks like our April craziness might be repeating again this year despite ENSO going in the complete opposite direction as last April.   The seasons have been sort of messed up and extreme for the last year.

The 00Z EPS still showed a pattern change starting by the middle of next week which is about the same timing as the 12Z run.   And still don't believe it yet.

@LowerGarfield the ECMWF has been speeding up the arrival of the precip on Friday... we are planning to get over the pass by 1 or 2 p.m.   Guessing I-90 won't be too bad during the daylight hours until maybe 6 or 7 p.m. though as precip is not real heavy yet.
