PNW March 2023 Weather Discussion (2012 Redux)

Requiem

Recommended Posts

It cleared off enough last night to dip to 29.  It was the slickest commute in this morning, worse than any of the snow.  Black ice everywhere, I slid several times.  Took it 15-25 mph under the speed limit during the rest of the drive.

I saw several cars into guardrails, my dad saw one on it's top etc.

Just had a shower roll through and drop another half inch or so. Partly sunny and 34 now.

Snowing and sticking occasionally

Amazing... considering it's been in the low 50s in many places in western WA.   And could be snowing like that tonight in spots up here.

Nice to see you all still rocking late season snow. The northwest looks like it'll enter a moderate drought which took me for a surprise. I just thought this would be a 2019 like year.

Paul Roundy believes the El Niño will build from east to west. Haven’t seen that since 1997.

Sitting here at the kitchen table looking out on a snow covered landscape, with flurries falling and the late evening sun peaking out. Doesn't get much better. #blessedlyfebestlyfe

A 2019-esque summer is my high bar at the moment.

East-based developing +ENSO years should serve as the best analogs. Not too many of those, but 2019 and 1997 are both on the list.

Probably cuz there is no basis to yet to say it looks like the NW is going to enter in to a moderate drought.

I know.   And I wasn't talking about leaf out.  Just the start of greening up.   It's unusually dormant for early March.   Just an observation.

Need to get back to biggest summer Karens mocking the snow Karen.  😀

We’re running way ahead of you guys this year. Willows have already leafed out, daffodils past peak, cherry blossoms blooming. Insane, incessant torching.

The map was probably before the last decent storm, can't remember but central and eastern Oregon still had one going. Lowlands had removal likely.

I found the post a little confusing since you said you were surprised the PNW is going into moderate drought but also that you were expecting a year in which they were also exceptionally dry around this time.

There were fires caused by escaped slash piles in late March 2019 up in the Santiam Canyon. One of the fires burned into Santiam State Park. The following March I walked through the burn on a cool sunny March day between snowstorms. I was inspired, in those early days of the pandemic, to see the renewal of life among the burn. Unbeknownst at the time would be the horror several months later.

May was the first real dry month in 2019 where I was.

Feb-Mar 2019 was good in those areas.

It seems there are usually daffodils blooming by late February down here. Haven't seen any yet, took a picture of some daffodils that were a week or two away when I was down in Lebanon the other day, but forgot to post for @TT-SEA.

I think Tim has an app that tells him when every single flower in the entire region has begun budding, so we can all just live vicariously through his updates.

IIRC the late March 2019 "heatwave" came with very low dewpoints and offshore winds. Up here we still had about a foot of snow cover, so there were no fire concerns, but down in the Santiam Canyon, the snow had melted off, and given the green up had not yet occurred, fuels got very dry.

Ah gotcha, you were looking at more location centric, not regional.

Maybe not the entire northwest.. 😇

That’s an east coast thing that I miss.

A humid evening in the mid 80s.

A horizon bounded by distant thunderheads whose peaks are illuminated by a silver glow from the moon, punched with purple flashes of lightning that never goes heard. The field in the foreground finds its own light show with the dazzle firefly’s doing their best to steal the show.

All enjoyed with a cold mid Atlantic sour.

I miss my southeast thunderstorms in summer. I don’t miss baseball sized hail and tornados

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but with this year's performance PDX has now seen a staggering 18/29 daily record low maximums in February come since 2006. With 8 different years in that bunch accounting for all of that.

For added effect you can also see January, which has had 2 record low maximums in the same timeframe.
