PNW March 2023 Weather Discussion (2012 Redux)

Requiem

Recommended Posts

Just did some quick math... If we hit a high of 52 today, then our monthly mean would be up to 35.1. March record is 37.4, we would need to average a mean of 40.3 the rest of the month to tie it. If something like the 06z GFS showed happens, then its definitely on the table.

One thing for sure is the models are bullish on another period of well below normal temps early in week two.

Incredible late winter for you.  Even here it has been notably chilly.

March can really deliver the goods up here. The 2017-2020 period was four straight years were March delivered big time. This year so far has been fairly similar to March 2019, though from here on out 2019 torched big time. Late March is definitely not to late for a big snow event up here, obviously we had last April, and March 2018 and 2012 both featured major snow events after the 20th.

Then of course you have the big outliers like late March 1936 that can have a widespread late season event.

For me the biggest disappointment of this season was our failure to get any significant snowfall in all of the cold weather since Feb 20.  Nearly impossible to get so little with so much potential.

Your depression kicks in during the spring? That’s unusual, usually it’s the other way around for SAD. For me the worst month is November.

The problem here is spring can be so gloomy.  The longer days just further accentuate the gloom.

As opposed to long nights and 430pm sunsets? That sounds pretty gloomy to me.

I have always had a rough time between January and April. Not as bad now as it was when I was a kid, probably because I hated school and it was a long haul of darkness and getting back into the dreaded routine of school after the holidays. All I could think about was opening day of fishing season. As an adult and especially the last several years we have had awesome weather events (at least in February/March) that has helped a lot.

January/Feb is the worst for me, especially if it doesn't snow. Snow falling and on the ground is my only savior. Cold, dark, gloomy.... I only pay the toll so I can enjoy the glory of summer.

Luckily my family lives on the water in Florida so I do have a place to go if it gets too bad.

I understand this.    In November its expected to be dark and the sun sets early.    Expectations are low.

In April and May its daylight forever and when its really gloomy and dark it feels wrong.    I understand that part of that is climo but that does not change the fact that it feels wrong.   In terms of expectations vs reality... April and May can often be the worst months for me as well.

A few people on here will mock this of course.   But I know this a pretty common feeling around here in those months.    It is what it is.

Last year was especially bad for April/May. It took SOOOO long for the sun to make an appearance. Then it didn't go away for 4 straight months.

Way to extreme for my liking on both sides.   There was no balance.   Winter to extreme summer and right back to winter.

Maybe the people getting depressed every year should look at other things in their lives besides blaming short days and the weather. If those things alone make people depressed then why do far northern countries in places like Scandinavia report some of the world’s highest overall happiness in their populations. Just food for thought.

This is so rich with irony.

We are only talking about a couple months out of the year which can at times feel depressing.   Not always.  No place is perfect.   I am sure people in Scandinavia have points in the year when they feel more depressed as well.

Or maybe you crave Florida summer weather because you live in western-WA, where such weather does not happen.

I doubt you’d enjoy that if if persisted 5+ months per year.

Easy to say if you don’t suffer from S.A.D.

The reason Scandinavia reports such high levels of happiness is because nobody with chronic seasonal depression chooses to live there. 😂 Families with genetic lineages vulnerable to the disease have all relocated elsewhere.

Meanwhile you have equatorial countries with plenty of light year round and…yeah, we won’t talk too much about those. I guess some make decent destinations for the depressed white people to visit.

This is so funny coming from you... someone who internalizes weather more than anyone else.

Its OK if people don't absolutely love every aspect of our climate.    Or any climate.    No place is perfect.   But you have to resort to mocking... which is really just projecting.
