Schools were closed yesterday and today... might be closed Friday... almost for sure will be closed Monday and Tuesday and maybe even longer.  Then its mid-winter break.

They might go to school just 3 days between Feb 1-25.

The legendary 1989 blast was 24mb. The also legendary 1990 December blasts were 25mb. So this would be unbelievable.

It's also important to note that the gradient is around the area that would cause the high wind. If the gradient difference was further north the air wouldn't be squeezed as hard.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

And just for perspective... the 12Z ECMWF showed a temperature of 30 degrees in Seattle on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the precip starting as snow.

I doubt SEA would be at 30 at 4pm unless there was another shot of air from the north before and cloud cover.  Friday will be warmer than today and even today was warmer than that.

I'm confused reading the last two pages.

It looks like it starts as rain, as it usually does in the swamp and then changes over to a slop and then accumulates to 4-8"?

These "L" sliding down the coast usually kick up an onshore flow that warms the atmosphere.

Honestly, this arctic blast to me has been pretty pathetic.  Sure I got 3" of snow but D**n, where were the ripping North winds in the south sound?  I don't think any of that cold dry air ever made it down here.  It's barely 32 outside and that's probably because there is some slop on the ground.

Did I miss the cold north winds?

Some spots are better or worse than others. It would seem we both live in poor locations.

Possible temperature bust in progress tonight if that clearing line doesn't slip south at all...

We felt the winds in Burien. In fact, a lot of our snow blew off the trees roofs and lawns and ended up in drifts that look like frozen waves up against the fence.

Shows a lot of the precip falling as rain with southerly flow for PDX Friday/Saturday but I think (hope) it's underestimating the gorge influence.

Definitely a lot better for Saturday-Sunday though.

Hopefully the GFS is just really wrong. That would be pretty depressing.

It's not awful for the area. Much better in the foothills too.

would be payback for january 2017 ;)

You guys already had your payback. February 6th, 2017 was cold rain down here and up there it was heavy snow. Also you guys had yesterday's event (a lot better up there).

jan 2017 PDX got a foot of snow. feb 2017 most of seattle got 3-4" (i got only 1.5"!) though there was 9" on the highest hills of west seattle. we didn't see a flake jan 11. i hope you guys don't get cold rain, but a foot of snow in seattle with nothing in PDX would be some actual payback.

That was a PDX based event. SLE and EUG didnt have much of anything. That event wasn’t as major and widespread as some seem to think.

You're in Puyallup? Most of the weather stations there are showing mid-20s there right now, which is pretty much consistent with the rest of South King and Piece counties.

As for the cold air not making it down here .. well, it got down to 12F where I am at last night and at least in the mid-teens in the Puyallup area. That's pretty d**n rare for these parts!

Then again, you guys were never forecasted to get anything out of that event. We had models giving us 5-8 inches of snow for that February event and we got nothing, so it was even more of a gut-punch.

Yeah. Actually the January 2017 event was pretty localized. Most of the other events that winter were more widespread.
