February Weather Stats...Monitoring This Historic Month

One more, from the Midwest -

International Falls Airport averaged -2.8 for the period Jan 16 - Feb 28 this year. This was 2nd coldest all-time during that stretch, behind only the massively -NAO 1962-63 winter, which averaged -3.7 during that stretch. Prior to the airport era, you have to go back to 1917 for a similarly cold average during the 2nd half of winter (-3.3 in 1917).

That Bozeman one seems off...

It is... Bozeman/Belgrade Airport received 26.2" of snow in February which was a new record for Feb. (by a long shot) While Bozeman MSU received 29.2 which is also a new record besting 2003.

Not sure where they grabbed their data...

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Coldest daily low: -42ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

A really amazing and well rounded list of accomplishments for SEA in February.

Temperature:

Monthly Average = 36.7 ... third place place behind 1956 (35.6) and 1989 (35.9)

Min 32 or below = 16 ... tied with 1956 for third place behind 1989 and 1949 with 17 each

Max below 40 = 9 ... second place behind 1949 with 13

Max of 50+ = 1 ... the least of any February except 1956 which had none

Daily record lows = 2

Snowfall:

Monthly total = 20.2" ... beats the previous record of 13.1" set in 1949

Days 1" or greater on the ground = 9  ... tied with 1949 for greatest number

Max depth = 7" ... tied with 1962 for most

Max 24 hour fall = 6.4" ... second to 1962 which had 7"

It's interesting how a lot of our epic Feb's were followed by great winters. 1884, 1887, 1916, 1923, 1929, 1936, 1956...

Are there any that were niños?

Because I’m having a very tough time seeing how we avoid a niño in 2019/20. The IPWP is not only displaced, but it’s still draining off the Maritime Continent as we approach the equinox. That just doesn’t happen in developing Niña years, and seldom happens in cases within cooling ENSO of any kind.

I think 1929-30 was a Nino, but I could be wrong.

1884-85 and 1929-30 were Ninos.

It is interesting that a very good statistical case could be made for not having a Nino winter though.  The two biggies are.

1. Having a multi year Nino so soon after the big 2014 - early 2016 Nino would be extremely rare.

2. Multi year El Ninos during a deep solar minimum would be either extremely rare or unheard of.

Particularly big Januaries.  Even 1989-90 had the impressive February and of course 1985-86 (after the decent Feb 1985) had the historically cold Nov / Dec combo.  You also need to add 1949 to your list.  As we all know 1949-50 worked out pretty well.

Keep in mind, based on a multitude of proxy evidence, the tendency for strong single year niños and multiyear niñas is mostly a modern-era/high solar response.

The Maunder/Dalton minimums and subsequent decades in the 18th/19th centuries had more *weak* multiyear niños and strong single-year niñas, with the most consistent tendency being colder Indo-Pacific Warm Pool SSTs, weakened Asian summer monsoons, and colder global temperatures.

The strong single year Ninas have treated us very well in the past.  1942-43 and 1988-89 both had epic cold waves under those conditions.

How did 1964/65 do? That was also a single-year niña.

Also, 1978/79 and 1981/82 were not niñas, but they were single-year -ENSO.

Joseph Oregon recorded 33.1" of snow in February and ended the month with a 16" depth. They have records going back to 1893. The snow records are fairly complete from 1893-1954 and again from 1995-present. February 2019 is now the snowiest February they have recorded.

A few more COOP stations have their February #'s up.

Heppner, OR (Period of record 1893-present)

Mean 28.0 (4th coldest), 31.0" of snow (Most all-time for February.)

Marion Forks Fish Hatchery, OR (Period of record 1948-present)

Mean 30.2 (3rd coldest), 63.9" of snow (2nd most all-time for February behind 1990 which had 90", there are 4 days missing from Feb 2019 snowfall, but those days would have probably had no more than 6-8" total given what other foothill/cascade locations measured on those days.).

Silverton and Stayton had their 2nd and 3rd coldest Februaries on record.

Silverton (1962-present)

Mean: 36.71 (2)

Max: 42.64 (1)

4th coldest and 2nd snowiest February on record in Klamath Falls.

27.50" at my house and 33.40" at OR-KL-5 station (CoCoRaHS network).

At the old KF station that recorded snowfall from the late 1800's through 2001, only two February's had more than 2 feet of snow. This one was 2nd only to 1938 with 39.00" and the previous 2nd snowiest was 26.00" in 1919.

Most, if not all of southern Oregon had one of their top 5 or top few coldest Februarys this year.

What's more, is that I didn't even have any historic singular 1 day snowfall events in February... Rather it was a bunch of 1-5" days randomly distributed through the month at a consistent pace. Imagine if another Jan 3-4 2017 had occurred in Feb 2019? How much snow would I be talking about? 40+ inches?
